I hope this isn't a silly question but I've just looked through the FAQ's and couldn't find anything obvious, what I'm wondering is whether this can be used as well as ie spyad or not ? and would it be a good idea to if it does or is it like an either or case in which case which would be the better one to use ?

Actually, they both can and are very frequently used in conjunction with one another.

In many cases you will find the same sites listed too. Especially when related to malicious sites.

If you open the MVPS hosts file, you can see there are notations indicating if the entries are also in IE-SPYAD, sample:

127.0.0.1 ad-up.com

127.0.0.1 www.ad-up.com

127.0.0.1 adatom.com

127.0.0.1 aesp.adatom.com

127.0.0.1 adbest.com #[iE-SpyAd]

127.0.0.1 www.adcipta.net #[W32/Malware]

127.0.0.1 adserv.adbonus.com #[iE-SpyAd]

127.0.0.1 www.adbonus.com

127.0.0.1 media.adcentriconline.com #[iE-SpyAd]

127.0.0.1 ad2.adcept.net

127.0.0.1 ad3.adcept.net

127.0.0.1 www.adcept.net #[iE-SpyAd]

127.0.0.1 adcomplete.com #[iE-SpyAd]

So its a good idea to run both, and neither will take up any resources or slow down your box. Altho, some of the larger hosts files may do that. Right now, at a little over 9100 or so, MVPS hosts does not.

Here is an IE-SPYAD Tutorial

And a Hosts File Tutorial by MVPS.

Hope thats been helpful

Yep thats great, I was using a hosts file prior to ie spyad, but haven't used one with it so I'll give it a go, may need to reinstall first though, thought I was doing well this time but after loading some protection from my isp to control the kids access I've lost my right click save as option even though I've uninstalled it I'm still having hassles :( but Thanks for the info.
