jamie823 Report post Posted November 21, 2004 i apologize for not being more computer savvy but when i booted into safe mode and went to search for the files once again my computer froze and i had to manually restart it. i did locate and tried to remove services.exe and fservice.exe, was told they were system files and if i removed them my computer or certain programs may not work... should i still delete? and why is my computer freezing in safe mode when i try to find these files? Jacee Report post Posted November 21, 2004 jamie, did you see my link to the virus that you have? http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojprorati.html Click on the "description" tab and you'll see this: Troj/Prorat-I is a backdoor which allows unauthorised access and control of the computer from a remote network location. Troj/Prorat-I drops the following files: C:\windows\services.exe C:\windows\system\sservice.exe C:\windows\system32\fservice.exe %Windows System%\wininv.dll %Windows System%\winkey.dll The Trojan also creates several registry entries and edits startup ini files to ensure it is run at boot. Troj/Prorat-I is hidden from the Task Manager and recreates any changes it has made if they are restored.

FZWG Report post Posted November 23, 2004 (edited) jamie823, We understand your frustration!! You have stayed with this so far, and we admire your perseverance. Please try the following: Close all windows and browsers and run HijackThis again. In the main screen of HijackThis, access Process Manager as follows: -Click on Config -Click on Misc Tools -Click on Open Process Manager (This window lists all open processes running on your machine.) -Click on the process below to select it: C:\WINDOWS\services.exe -Click on Kill Process to end the process Do the same for: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ykyikb.exe Next, open a command prompt by clicking on: Start>Run and type in: cmd -Click OK -At the blinking cursor, copy/paste the following: regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system32\wininv.dll -Press Enter (If it notifies that wininv.dll cannot be found, go on to the next step.) -At the blinking cursor, copy/paste the following: regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system32\winkey.dll -Press Enter -Type: Exit to close the command prompt window Now, go back to the main screen of HijackThis -Click on Config -Click on Misc Tools -Select: Delete a File on Reboot In the File Name field of the Enter File to be Deleted window, copy/paste: C:\WINDOWS\services.exe -Press the Open button (You are notified that the file in question will be deleted on reboot) -Click No when asked whether you want to restart the computer In the File Name field of the Enter File to be Deleted window, copy/paste: C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe -Press the Open button -Click No when asked whether you want to restart the computer In the File Name field of the Enter File to be Deleted window, copy/paste: C:\windows\system\sservice.exe -Press the Open button -Click No when asked whether you want to restart the computer In the File Name field of the Enter File to be Deleted window, copy/paste: C:\Windows\system32\Winkey.dll -Press the Open button -Click No when asked whether you want to restart the computer In the File Name field of the Enter File to be Deleted window, copy/paste: C:\Windows\system32\wininv.dll -Press the Open button -Click Yes when asked whether you want to restart the computer! Restart the computer in Safe Mode: -When the machine first starts again, tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. -Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys. -Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode. Proceed to run HijackThis and Scan. Fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate box and selecting Fix Checked: F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe Next, still in Safe Mode, go to Start>Run, and type in: %temp% When the contents are displayed, press the following two keys simultaneously: Ctrl+A to select all Click Delete on the keyboard Empty the Recycle Bin. Next, go to Control Panel>Internet Options. On the General tab under: Temporary Internet Files, click: Delete Files Place a check by: Delete Offline Content when the prompt appears, and click OK. Next, click on the Programs tab, then click: Reset Web Settings Click Apply, then OK. Finally, reboot into Normal mode. Make sure all windows and browsers are closed before proceeding to run HijackThis and Scan so we can review a new log. There are still a couple of other options we can use to get rid of this intruder if it still does not go away, so hang in there. Thank you. Note - added step to unregister dlls. FZWG Report post Posted November 25, 2004 jamie823 We have some stubborn malware. It is still there. However, there are still some options, and we’re counting on the fact that you are not a quitter. Considering you have a dial up connection, don’t want you to do any more extensive downloading, so let’s use a program that is not too large to download, and is easy to use. Go to the following website and download Registrar Lite. You will find it under Registry Tools: http://www.resplendence.com/download It is version 2.0, and to the right, it says: download. Save the file to a folder, and double click on the Reglite square to run it. Now, please copy/paste the following entries (one at a time) to Registrar Lite, and post back the information you find: First entry: In the Address area, copy/paste the following and click on GO (green button, far right): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon On the right pane several entries appear Scroll down to find the one called: Shell Double click Shell for a Data Editor to appear In the Value area (bottom of Data Editor), which of these appear: Explorer.exe, or, Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Fservice.exe Second entry: Once again, in the Address area, copy/paste the following and click on GO: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion On the right pane several entries appear Scroll down to find the one called: Run Double click Run and its values appear on the right side Is there one called: DirectX For Microsoft® Windows If so, double click DirectX For Microsoft® Windows for a Data Editor to appear In the Value area (bottom of Data Editor), does this appear: C:\Windows\System32\fservice.exe Third entry: Once again, in the Address area, copy/paste the following and click on GO: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software Still in the left pane, look under Software for exactly the following: Microsoft DirectX Is it there? Close Registrar Lite. Now, go to Start>Search, and look for the following file: KTD32.ATM Is the file found? Let us know results: First entry: Explorer.exe, or, Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Fservice.exe Second entry: C:\Windows\System32\fservice.exe (Yes or not there) Third entry: Microsoft DirectX (Yes or No) KTD32.ATM: Is the file found? (Yes or No) The information you provide will determine what to do next. Thank you.

yellowhammer Report post Posted November 26, 2004 Still there. Here are about 3 other things that may get us some more information. 1 Download Service Filter from here or here and unzip it. Follow the instructions that will be unzipped in the folder. Post the contents from the POST_THIS.TXT file that is generated. 2. Download the Registry Search Tool here. Unzip it and run it. If your antivirus inteferes you may have to disable script blocking in the antivirus. Put the following in the search box: services.exe Post the results. 3. Download autoruns here. Open it and click on view at the top menu and make sure all the following are checked. Show All Locations Show Services Then click the save button and save the .txt file generated. Copy and paste the contents of it into the next reply.
