I'll put it this way,,if your ready for a format anyway,,go ahead and install all the gator stuff and check out what gets offered and by who.

I did,, and its pathetic the names of companies who use gator as there main online ad servers.

Gator is a huge company,,and they won't like us messing with their wallet,,but screw um!! ;) v

The issue is really an educational issue. The public needs to start associating Gator and Gator copycats as evil as a virus. Everyone knows what a virus is, but few know that spyware is. The boycott list is one way we are working to draw attention to the issue so the media will start writing more articles about it.

I had the Gator bite once....and only once. After I spnaked it, he never came back, lol. That was THE most difficult p.o.s. spyware program to get rid of. This was before I was aware of or spy catching programs existed. It really bogs and grinds your machine to a hault! Thanks for leading the charge in getting rid of this crap! :nospys::woot:

I had Gator on my first computer many many moons ago, and I didn't even know it was spyware back then...Hell! I didn't even know what spyware was back then. But it annoyed me so much with all the damn pop ups and pop unders that I uninstalled it. Not long after that, I reformatted for the first time. I never linked the two separate events, but I'll bet I had to reformat BECAUSE of Gator. In fact, now I'm SURE I did!

The more people we can educate, the better. There are still so many people that are not aware that spyware and adware are no better than viruses, trojans and worms. They stuff your pc full of crap you don't need, didn't ask for, and don't want. They suck up your bandwidth, and your pc resources, until finally the system is almost at a stand-still.

I say DEATH TO THE :gator:!!!!!!!!!!! It's not enough to just have people get rid of the gator from their own systems. We need EVERYONE to get rid of the gator, and get the companies doing business with the Gator to go elsewhere for their advertising needs.

Ok...I'm done ranting now. ;)

I prefer Gator nullification. The companies go where they can get an audience. Money talks, not letters. Remove the audience and the Gator dries out in the swamp.

Nullification is fine. But keeping Gator off of your computer is just the tip of the iceberg. To really stop Gator, you have to hit em' where it hurts. In the wallet. And to do that you need to convince those companies that advertise with them to not do so. The best way to do that is to get the word out that these companies use Gator are not good companies to do business with, and boycott those companies. When their revenue starts to drop because of Gator, they will drop Gator. Without advertisers, Gator will go out of business. So as Rob said, it's an educational issue.

If letters are going to be written.....I'm thinking letters to local news stations have the best chance of success. I don't know about yours, but sometimes the guys over here are really digging to get enough to last their allotted time.....

V. Ax, Dave, Rob, Hammer, and the rest of the ASB , I hate this spyware #%^*! i run adawrae and spybot after every session on my pc at home and at work! also every pc i work on at work gets adaware and spybot installed on it like it or not end users!!! :nospys::nospys:

I've informed the whole software team about the dangers of spyware, and how to prevent it. somw have taken my advice, some of them haven't ( old school hard heads)

I've also been trying " Highjack this" program for users that have had their browsers hijacked by spyware, I support 20,000 end users, so i've got my work cut out. luckily our new member HudZon, is a software Genius, and a co-worker of mine, and together we fight this everyday at work!

keep up the fight!

All,

Here is our plan and how everyone can contribute.

1. Boycott list - Based on Volt's work, we have compiled a list of over 100 companies for the boycott list. Because the list is so big, my HTML skills were not enough to format the table well. <rant> I had no idea it was so hard to export an Excel worksheet to HTML </rant> The page will be located at http://www.pcpitstop.com/boycott.asp . Once we have it live, I will let everyone know here first, so that we can tweak the list and find updates, etc.

2. Public Relations - We have retained a PR agency specifically for this purpose. Actually, it's a friend of mine, but she is a PR pro for many years. She has already contacted many of your contacts and there is a LOT of interest in what we are doing. Of course, if any one knows anyone in the press, please feel free to help us generate more buzz.

3. Secret Weapon - After that, I hope that we will increased the awareness of the Gator and its ilk. After this wave, Dave and I are working on a secret weapon. It won't be ready until sometime in Q4, but it should be a pretty good encore for our first wave of PR.

On another note, I just spent about a week and a half updating our spyware databases. That's right, a week and a half! The reason is that there are so many new spywares being created all the time. Because Gator is making so much money AND so many people are unaware of spyware, the problem is growing all the time. We got to do something big and soon.

Sounds good so far Rob. Just a note here...TechTv did another little thing on spyware today...a list of the top 10 things to NEVER download to your computer. And guess what was on there? Yep, you guessed it...Gator, Bonzi Buddy, and Hotbar....

I just thought it was interesting. :nospys:

well...i must admit i used gator for awhile on my old comp then it died, and now the more i read the more :filtered: off i become at gator. that is bull**** that its legal to do something like that. but, just staying at the pit isnt going to spread the word. we have the greatest tools in the world sitting right in front of us, our hands and the internet. building a website solely on the purpose of uncovering gator's real intentions and giving anti-spyware programs, forums, and give information to inform the masses would help very much to get more people to understand how much gator is just out to get money, and doesnt really care about the customer or their computers. of course overloading them with information they dont understand wont help either, but showing them that the money that they've worked for is going down the drain will sure get some peoples attention. we may know a little (or alot) about gator and spyware, but many people dont. you may already have a site and im rambling on like an idiot, but if you do i dont know about it ^_^. anyways i no a little about website building and formats if anyone wants to do something like this. one thing we cant do is just have a small site thats only getting 50-100 hits a day though, this has to be big....

if anyone is interested or has something to say feel free to email me (i will also make a topic about this too)

OK. We now have a first run at a Gator Boycott List. Sorry, I am a little behind schedule but I ended up with msblast yesterday.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/boycott.asp

We need volunteers to scrub the list well. Many of the links were copied from Volt's posts earlier in this thread. When the link is too long, it puts ..... instead, and then the link ended up broken. We also have dups and other stuff. But it is at least a first pass.

Please everyone, let's scrub this clean so it is ready for public consumption. You can post your edits in this thread.

Thanks!

Hi, I wrote a short statement of sorts

Imagine having vultures circling every time you go online. Imagine corporations monitoring your every movement unbeknownst to you, and waiting, collecting statistics, and delivering pop up ads so frequent that you can’t stand to be online.  Imagine that the software that enables this corporate debacle is poorly written and causes hosts of problems in computers worldwide.

Who would think that supposedly respectable major international corporations would support this kind of surreptitious marketing so called "strategy" to the point that the henchman, leader and director of these activities- Gator Corporation pulled in revenues in excess of 100 million dollars the last fiscal year.

Who would think that Coca-Cola, Avon, Michelin, Discover Card, Gateway Inc., MasterCard, even Hoover’s Inc, just to name a few, would stoop so low as to seek to bore into your computer like a parasite and to devour and drain the very lifeblood of your computer and computing experience.

Who would dare to put forth the proposition that these corporations actually believe that we are going to put up with this exceedingly obnoxious, dastardly, and grossly overreaching behavior by certain members of the corporate sector?

Well, we believe that this is NOT AT ALL ACCEPTABLE. We strive to alert the public of these deviant acts and furthermore, we seek to get these corporations FROM PREYING ON AND ABUSING WEB USERS WORLDWIDE.  Therefore, WE PROPOSE AN IMMEDIATE BOYCOTT OF THE COMPANIES LISTED HEREIN.

Signed,

PCPitstop.
