Guest Barbara
The test says my downloads are at 18 instead of 56. Any advice on how to speed it up? Thank you.
aeroman10
What do you mean instead of 56? Are you using dial up? If so, then just because the modem is 56K doesnt mean that you actually obtain that speed. In the U.S. the FCC regulation is that you can only connect at a max speed of 53K and that is rare. You have to have perfect phonelines for that.
Guest Barbara
So 18 is OK and nothing I can do to speed it up? (It is a 56K modem.) thanks. Barbara
Guest mike5532g
You should give your ISP a call and find out what your rated down and upload speeds are for your line. This will let you know if your speed is too low. Edited February 24, 2003 by mike5532g
HammerSlammer
Barbara you might also want to run a pitstop test and post the results here. You may have some nasties running in the background and using up some of your bandwidth http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress/howto1.asp :welcome:
Stasi
18 is substandard. Most people can at least pull off an equivalent connection on a 56K as on a 33.6.

StealthKing
I heard you can use dual 56k modems with 2 phone lines and have a faster connection.
snakeeye2003
slow down bubba, your giving me a headache........... on a 56k modem, there are too many variables to say if ones speed is good or bad. You would hope for the highest possible at any given time. If broadband is available in your area, I would suggest an upgrade. The few extra dollars you spend is well worth the investment.
