windows update hangs ( runs and runs)

I am trying to fix my husbands

hP pavilion dv6000

Windows Home Premium Vista 32 bit Service Pack 2

When checking for updates it will run FOREVER with nothing :unsure:

It hasn't had a update since Dec 5, 2016

windows defender always is asking for updates and it does the same thing.

Will be watching for someones reply

Y.... thank you for your fast reply. I done the fix ( without checking the box for the aggrestive fix ) It's checking for updates now. We'll see if it runs forever. Going to let it go for quite some time seeing it hasn't worked since it hasn't done updates in such a long time.

If this doesn't work, should I check the box in the fix it for the aggrestive fix. ? Didn't check it beause I thought to try it without first, seeing it said it might take out some updates with checking the box.

How long do you think I should let the windows update check for updates? I started the check for updates 1/18 at 10:40 a.m. and is now 11: 35 a.m.

Oh and done the fix without it checking for updates. And if you want me to do the aggestive one, should I do it WITHOUT it checking for updates?

 

Just seen on windows update it says

Most recent check for updates 8/4/2016

updates were installed on 8/4/2016

 

Asking all these questions now, so I won't have to later.

I've never used the "fix" but I'd think that it should be finished searching for updates by now...I have let PC's run all night before searching all to no avail.

You may also want to think about updating the Operating System to Win 8-8.1 because Vista is on it's last legs...you can run the update tool here to determine if your PC will handle Win 8... > https://windows-8-upgrade-assistant.en.softonic.com/
