Bad image error.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I opened my laptop this afternoon and I've been getting these "Bad image" errors non-stop since then. I run Windows 7 and the text in the error is the typical:

"someprogram.exe - Bad Image

...either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support".

Any assistance with this issue would be very, very appreciated!

I did download the FRST64 and have both the addition and FRST lists, would those be helpful?

Do you still have the 2 antivirus on the computer?

HKLM-x32\...\Run: [AvastUI.exe] => C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastUI.exe [7139768 2016-03-10] (AVAST Software)

(Sophos Limited) C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\Web Control\swc_service.exe

Then you tried to remove Sophos?, there are still many services and related files left behind from an incomplete uninstall.

Description: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable.

Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume2

We can run the chkdsk utility shortly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please open Notepad *Do Not Use Wordpad!* or use any other text editor than Notepad or the script will fail. (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the quote box below:
To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it and select copy.
Paste this into the open notepad. save it to the Desktop as fixlist.txt
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST/FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.
It needs to be saved Next to the "Farbar Recovery Scan Tool" (If asked to overwrite existing one please allow)
I did try to remove it, I got it from university and it stopped working after awhile and that's when I tried to get rid of through control panel uninstall but it didn't work. I got Avast after this problem started as a recommendation from a friend. Also, since you mentioned Sophos I wanted to get a screenshot of the error message. I thought this was a generic problem but I think I may be wrong:
The fixlist was created and FRST64 was run and it gave me the Fixlog here: (computer was also restarted but the errors popped up once the user screen appeared again)
The screen shot displays a file needed by Sophos to run correctly but has been partially removed.
We can remove the other left over related files to Sophos but, is this something that was required by University? and if the remaining files/folders, services are removed will this cause a problem at the school?
You make the decision, I'll list the fix to follow if Sophos can be removed.
Please open Notepad *Do Not Use Wordpad!* or use any other text editor than Notepad or the script will fail. (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the quote box below:
To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it and select copy.
Paste this into the open notepad. save it to the Desktop as fixlist.txt
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST/FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.
It needs to be saved Next to the "Farbar Recovery Scan Tool" (If asked to overwrite existing one please allow)
C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\sdcfilter.sys
C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\SophosBootDriver.sys
EmptyTemp:
End
Open FRST/FRST64 and press the > Fix < button just once and wait.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post it to your reply.
Please tell me what the computer is doing now?
Oh, it was just a program offer from the school for students and it just failed to continue working and would refuse to start up, so no issue there! But I completed the fixlist and it restarted and I've been waiting and browsing and using it normally and so far none of the errors have popped up!
Thank you very, very much! I apologize for not just posting the screenshot earlier, I should have provided more information but it's been a bit crazy, thank you again! I genuinely appreciate your patience with my lack of good judgement there.
Also, here is the fixlog just in case it would be useful for future reference:
Glad it's working now and your welcome
What we can do now is run an online scan with Eset, for the time being it is our most trusted scanner.
Most reliable and thorough.
The settings I suggest will show us items located in quarantine folders so don't be alarmed with this, also, in case of a false positive I ask that you not allow it to delete what it does find.
This scanner can take quite a bit of time to run, depending of course how full your computer is.
Note: This scan may take a long time to complete. Please do not browse the Internet whilst your Anti-Virus is disabled.
Note: This scan may take a long time to complete. Please do not browse the Internet whilst your Anti-Virus is disabled.
  • Please download ESET Online Scan and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus software. For instructions, please refer to the following link.
  • Double-click esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to run the programme.
  • Agree to the EULA by placing a checkmark next to Yes, I accept the Terms of Use. Then click Start.
  • Agree to the Terms of Use once more and click Start. Allow components to download.
  • Place a checkmark next to Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
  • Click Advanced settings. Place a checkmark next to:
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Ensure Remove found threats is unchecked.
  • Click Start.
  • Wait for the scan to finish. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • Upon completion, click esetListThreats.png. If no threats were found, skip the next two bullet points.
  • Click esetExport.png and save the file to your Desktop, naming it something such as "MyEsetScan".
  • Push the Back button.
  • Place a checkmark next to xKN1w2nv.png.pagespeed.ic.JWqIaEgZi7.png and click SzOC1p0.png.pagespeed.ce.OWDP45O6oG.png.
  • Re-enable your anti-virus software.
  • Copy the contents of the log and paste in your next reply.
what's your opinion of Avast, is it a good program for protection
Sorry I didn't see this earlier.
Avast is a good antivirus but, others are too. What helps a computer the most is layered security which I'll post info about this too.
I think your good to go!
