The last two weeks when I turn the computer on, it seems to load slowly as I get on to FB. Sometimes it freezes for a few moments then it goes back to normal. The computer is fine the rest of the day but it is annoying when it freezes or is slow loading when I'm on FB.

Also, if I go to a different page on FB, it seems to take a few extra minutes to load as well.

Any ideas?

I did a scan with malwarebytes and Norton and everything came up fine. I don't think it's FB though and the autoplay is disabled.

Yesterday when I turned it on, it froze a bit when it was on ESPN.com

EDIT: I do have adblock but not adblock plus.

You may have 'adware' that needs to be cleaned out:

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

Step 1.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator

    .
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Step 2.
Using AdwCleaner: Scan & Clean:

This time click on the Clean button.
Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[s#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).

Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder

I should have checked a bit more often than I did. It booted it up fine yesterday morning then I turned it off and later on when I got home late, it would not boot at all so I turned it off and obviously, I haven't done the adware clean up yet that you have suggested. Seems I can't load windows at all or but did a system repair and it runs for a bit then it says it can't repair it.

I cannot even load Windows in safe mode either and system restore didn't work either.

Seems I need to get me a DVD +R or -R disc to do the back up on. I do have a DVD RW back up disc from when I did a back up a few years ago.

EDIT: YAY!! I tried a different restore and it worked. To the 27th of last month, think it was before the update.

Okay.... Not sure what was up with Norton 360 but had to unisntall then reinstall it and I did have some slowness still when I was installing it. I did change my adblock to Adblock plus since when I clicked the adblock button, it didn't show anything.

Here is the first report when I scanned the computer.

Btw, when I was getting to the folder to open it for the Adwcleaner, I had the loading issue again, like the folder this time would be not responding.
Could this be a Windows issue?

It could be. Let's see if cleaning out all temps might help.

Please download TFC by Old Timer http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/TFC-Temp-File-Cleaner-OldTimer-file187.htmland save it to your desktop.

Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser! This will also hide all desktop shortcuts, so just be aware! They will come back after rebooting.

Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! Manually reboot the machine to ensure a complete clean.

One thing you can do is this...open Start/Computer and right click the "C" drive. Select Properties and go to the Tools tab, Error Checking and click Check Now. A small window will pop up with two options, Automatically fix system errors, and Scan for lost files. Make sure both are checked and click Start. It will tell you that the drive is in use and will check the drive upon restarting. Reboot and let it run. *****Note, it will take quite awhile to scan for lost files so don't plan on using the PC while this jis going on.

edit: I like to sit and watch mine so I can see what it finds, if anything. If it finds bad sectors on the drive, your hard drive may be going bad... ;)

I did a check scan disk and I went to play my game when it finished. If there was a disk issue, would there be a report?

I see I have some updates, should I try and see if that would help?

Here is what my cleaner looks like as to settings, do you have any suggestions. The first one, Obvouskly, the top 2 or 3 that don't show will be ticked.

Hi , This should allow you to see the Check Disk Results ,,

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type powershell.exe, and press Enter.

  2. In PowerShell, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter. (see screenshot below) NOTE: To paste the copied command into PowerShell, you will just need to right click in PowerShell.

  3. Enter the command

    get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt
  4. You will now have a CHKDSKResults.txt file created on your desktop that is the log file of your chkdsk scan results from Event Viewer.

Regards Philip .

I did the disk check and there are no problems.

I did two screen shots of the task manager that shows the processes, I wonder if maybe Chrome is the issue.

The first one is when I turned on the computer yesterday morning and the second is a few minutes after it froze.

Third one is this morning after I opened Chrome and it froze a bit then again after I closed Chrome.

  • 4 weeks later...

It's okay right now but the last two days it has been slow again. I have run Malwarebytes on the computer but shows no malware.

What if I uninstalled Norton and installed Avast? I have Avast on my laptop even though it's a Windows 8.

  • 3 weeks later...

I don't know what MBAM managed to get rid so I offer this.

I would get rid of, "Pokki", if you have not done so already. I'm pretty sure MBAM does not.

Pokki may not be happy about being uninstalled, it may require more than one effort from the "5 ways".

This link provides instructions for 3 different operating systems.

5 Ways to Uninstall Pokki

and

I would disable (if not actually uninstall) the YahooPartnerToolbar and see how your system runs after that.
