nigsy
The Windows XPocalypse is almost upon us. After a legendary dozen year run, Microsoft will stop providing security patches for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. Without Microsoft’s protection, all those WinXP PCs will have targets painted on their hard drives. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2102606/how-to-keep-your-pc-secure-when-microsoft-ends-windows-xp-support.html
KurtBleach
Yeah, but it's not just Windows. I run openSUSE 12.2, and it has reached its end of life also. I feel safer in Linux than I would in Window$, but as it stands financially for me, I can't upgrade SUSE. I tried to go from 12.2 to 12.3, and it's documented somwhere on these threads how it was a fail on my PC. I'm just going to run it until I can afford a new PC. I can't try 13.1 because my CD/DVD drive is dead.
Bruce
The Windows XPocalypse is almost upon us. After a legendary dozen year run, Microsoft will stop providing security patches for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. Without Microsoft’s protection, all those WinXP PCs will have targets painted on their hard drives. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2102606/how-to-keep-your-pc-secure-when-microsoft-ends-windows-xp-support.html Windows XP computers have had targets painted on their hard drives for more than a decade. The fact that MS won't provide security patches any longer doesn't make targets just appear now The reason they have always had targets painted on their hard drives is because of Microsoft's poor security and lack of timely patches. So really not much is changing other than the fact that now it is "official" that MS doesn't do anything Edited March 7, 2014 by Bruce
badbinary
osx 10.6 is likely done with support, as well. http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/03/snow-leopard-updates-are-probably-done-here-are-your-os-x-upgrade-options/

geewhiz
This surprised me.... especially since the demise of XP has been known about for a long time http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/04/not-dead-yet-dutch-british-governments-pay-to-keep-windows-xp-alive/

terry1966
seemed as good a place as any to post this. Registry hack enables continued updates for Windows XP http://www.zdnet.com/registry-hack-enables-continued-updates-for-windows-xp-7000029851/ no idea on what it actually means for xp's security in the real world but thought it might interest some. nigsy
I saw this posted on another forum.....I didn't repost as I was concerned about the home version of XP being different to the versions still being supported. I have no idea how these updates work and how they work across versions?? I also think adding more registry hacks to an already dead OS is asking for trouble!! Good link though
