Windows Defender

Wondering what you guys think or what experience you've had with Windows Defender. Just got a new computer with Windows 8.1 and that was an option and it was free, so I currently have it running. I'm used to Norton and it has served me well over the years ( I think ), so I'm hesitant about change.

Windows Defender is not an anti-virus program, it's an anti-spyware program, and not even the best one of those.

Read over these links carefully, you will need to make a decision to download an antivirus.

In windows 8, Windows Defender is not the one we are all used to in XP Vista, and 7. Windows defender is the same program we know as Microsoft Security Essentials in previous versions. You can see that in the PCWorld link that Juliet provided above, or here from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/windows8.aspx

In Windows 8, Windows Defender replaces Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender runs in the background and notifies you when you need to take specific action. However, you can use it anytime to scan for malware if your computer isnt working properly or you clicked a suspicious link online or in an email message.

Personally, I'd keep it and stay away from Norton.

Windows Defender on Win 7 is not the same as on Win 8,8.1

Antivirus on Windows 8: Looking at Your Options

Microsoft will include antivirus in Windows 8 for the first time in the history of Windows.

But will this software--the new version of Windows Defender--provide adequate protection against

viruses, spyware, and other malware? Let's take a closer look at what Windows Defender provides,

and whether its features are enough to keep you safe.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/259876/antivirus_on_windows_8_looking_at_your_options.html

since the op is using Windows 8.1 Windows Defender is a Antivirus program but is it good or not is a

different story

if combined with the smartscreen filter in IE 10,11 and UAC set to high you can do ok if you are a advanced

user and surf safe and also use on-demand or online scans as backups to WD

but if you are not a advanced user you would need something else because Windows Defender is not the best but

it also will not slow down your pc like other Av's out there

i use Windows Defender on Win 8.1 and have not been infected but i surf safe only get downloads from safe places

no p2p and i use some sort of virtualization if i'm not sure

also there is a lot of good free Antivirus software out there for proection and way better than Windows Defender

:)
