no internet access - strange happenings

Recommended Posts

Wifes uncles computer - called me and said he updated AVG and after the reboot he lost internet connection. Said limited access to the network. I stopped over and couldn't get it to finish the connection. The adapters weren't even showing in "ipconfig /all".

I took computer home and ran troubleshooter and it said driver issue - downloaded an updated driver and no luck. Found a MS support file that said to uninstall the driver and reboot. I did this and now it doesn't even see the any networks. So I figured I would just plug in direct to my router - no connection.

I asked for help in the internet connection section and was directed to uninstall AVG which I did with same result and to run an AVG uninstaller with same results. I couldn't run any spyware / maleware since I couldn't get a connection to download / update the definitions. I have posted the dds and hjt logs below. Right now I download to a different computer and transfer files via usb to said computer.

It's an Asus U52F laptop with intel 6250 with wimax wireless adapter. Running 64 bit win 7 home premium. The computers name was "bob" which doesn't make any sense to me since I set up the computer for them and do not remember naming it that. I have changed it to Sues-laptop hoping for it to help but nope. So, I am not sure if the avg update had anything to do with what happened or just a coincidence, which is what I suspect. But I ask in here now since I am not sure if there is more happening behind the scenes that isn't allowing it to connect.

I appreciate any help in the matter and hopefully a resolution.

Ben

Hi.

Something similar happened to me when a friend had cleaned the laptop while she waited for some updates to finish and had accidentally turned off the Wireless function ie: like in flight mode. Had me scratching my head for sometime. On looking on-line for a (pdf) user manual it's [FN+F2] to bring the Icon back on.

Regards

El Tel

El Tel - Yes, the adapter is turned on - with Asus laptops (not sure about others) there is also a switch on the left side to turn it off as well, small and just above the sd card slot. I have seen this get switched before and unless you know its there - can take a while to figure it out.

Tomk - I didn't think it was a maleware related issue as their computer really seems to be quite clean. They don't use it for too much and I think whatever happened was just a coincidence that the adapter got corrupted. I installed spybot after trying most other things when I decided to post this thread but wasn't able to DL the definitions. I will talk to him tonight at work and get with them hopefully this weekend and backup their stuff and try the repair install.

I appreciate your time and response!

Ben

In theory... the repair install should not mess with any of their existing files... but backing up first is always the best approach.

If the repair install does not work... let me know and there are a couple of other tricks we can try. If still no joy I'll send you to some Techs that are more proficient with windows than I am. I'm just a malware guy. ;)

Tomk_ -

I finally was able to get with my wifes uncle to do some backup on it and try the repair install. After the backups were taken, I read the site you directed me to. I was going to do the reboot and start the process but somehow ended up in system restore again before I rebooted. I ended up selecting a date in June from a critical update and it actually worked. All the previous attempts at a restore failed.

Upon reboot the wireless still didn't connect, I ran the troubleshooter and it said the adapter was turned off (all previous attempts were reported with a driver issue for the adapter). I allowed it to turn it on and it immediately connected to the internet. I am currently uninstalling avg and will do a reinstall of the new version of it.

I appreciate your help and time to look over my issue. Just wanted to report back finally and let you know all is good again....

THANKS !

Ben
