if this is an unusual behaviour that recently started?

1. are the banner ads for the same thing or random

2. are they popping up for every webpage or certain specific domains?

3. do they float on top of the webpage or appear to be integrated into it?

Unusual behavior that recently started

1, Random content

2. Not every webpage but getting close I feel

3. Appear to "float" on top of webpage but take up the ENTIRE screen. They can be deleted thank heavens.

You don't say what browser you use...if Firefox ADblock pus works a treat: https://adblockplus.org/en/firefox

Not sure what protection you run but try Spywareblaster if you don't already use it, I've seen it removeblock a lot of stuff.

I suggest a scan with this > http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/malwarebytes_anti_malware.html

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

For Win XP you should be running these two programs, very helpful and very good :

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spywareblaster.html < runs in the background to keep "nasties" off your PC. Install, update, enable all protection, close. Done!

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spywareguard.html < an oldie but a goodie. Works well with XP, just load the default settings and you should be good to go.

That doesn't surprise me, saw a temporary rise myself recently, I seriously doubt this is infection based as such, purely a temporary hole that allowed these things to get through, all I did was make sure Java (v7 Update 21 currently) and Flash (v11.7.700.169 currently) both player AND Active x were fully up to date, make sure I had the latest Hosts file, and check daily for updates for Spywareblaster, and to the best of my understanding this does not run in real time, it does the same as the Hosts file, except this is the Flash based version of this, and just adds known unwanted stuff to the systems files in the same manor as the Hosts file does, hopefully once you update these bits you should see a decline in such ad's.

if you installed any software that came with Adware, you'll get those banned ads too. Usually most Ad-ware like that is promoted as free. Malwarebytes usually won't remove legitimate ad-ware that you have installed

ditch internet explorer and get a good browser like chrome, then use the ad block addon.

Well, I did just notice something at the very tip top margin of the banner ad I have missed before now that says:

THIS PAGE DELIVERED TO YOU BY A WEB BROWSER EXTENSION. OK then, does that help solve this problem?

Click on "Tools" under the address bar, do you have pop-up blocker turned on?
