Getting ready to upgrade and.......

Recommended Posts

I am looking for sugestions on my upgrade. I already have Windows Seven for an operating system and do not want Win 8 at this time.I AM NOT IN TO OVERCLOCKING OR GAMING SO,Looking for a very stable everyday computer built for reliability.I am looking to go with an AMD based motherboard and processor instead of Intel as I have in the past. I am currently looking at a Gigabyte GA 970A-D3 AMD+AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB3.0 ATX motherboard to start things off. I am looking for any suggestions or thoughts.

First of all, stay away from the 970 chipset. You want the 990FX series...

Secondly, I'm not sure what you need exactly or your budget...so here goes...

SSD's are the up and coming thing although you don't get much storage space for your $. They're getting cheaper, BUT...I just like 'em for the speed of things but a good fast platter drive like that Velociraptor is hard to beat...You may want to scrap the idea of the SSD and do regular hard drives...

I am making a quick left turn and jumping to another needed up grade, the wife's computer currently a Dell 4300. I need a recommendation for a good microATX board with processor and 8 gigs of memory. This upgrade will take priority over mine. I thought about using the same case but think it would be best to get upgraded all the way around.

Curious but do you know much or heard anything bad about the ASUS M5AT8L-M-LX PLUS with the Zambesi processor. One supplier has a package price on the board, processor and memory but one of the reviews stated that the processor did not want to work with the board with out a bios upgrade.I don't want to get into that problem but that is always a possibility. Also any thoughts on a Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 LGA 1155 uATX board?

  • 4 weeks later...

Caintry, what is wrong w/ the 970? Currently running it (same board to boot, lol) and see NO problems at all. If I'm not mistaken, the main difference is only the PCIe lanes and 1 slot on the 970. Personally not a problem being I don't ever intend on 2 cards....

Also, the 7200.14 drives are getting closer to keeping pace w/ the raptors now w/ the 1tb platters. about twice as fast as my older 7200.12 drives interestingly. Far cheaper vs the raptor when it comes to size. Though no match for ssd if you need the speed that price buys.
