If your computer is slow or freezing when scanning for virus is probably that is stuck checking .zip and .rar files which it get a while to complete if you have a lot and it may freeze completely.

You can try excluding those type of files from the scan. Anti-Virus programs have an option that allows you to exclude files or extensions. For example in Microsoft Security Essentials, open it and go to Settings, there click Excluded File Types and add the extensions (zip or rar).

The anti-virus should detect if a virus is in a compressed or zipped folder when opening it.

Note: Try this only if you are really having problems when doing scanning.
