I have been fortunate enough to update my main computer from a Q9550 Socket 775 and a GeForce 9800 GTX+ to the new Intel 2600K and a EVGA 460 GTX. Pretty pleased so far. Got it up and folding but not sure yet if I am maxing its potential yet--using bigadv and big max-packet-size. I did put in my folding passkey, so am waiting for bonuses. Still tweaking it and working out some bugs

Here's the Pit test:

you got it set up correctly ff2?

i'd have thought your ppd would be a lot higher by now running bigadv wu's, i assume you've been using your passkey all along so you shouldn't need to complete 10 wu's with it before seeing the bonus points now.

Yeah, doesn't seem like it , terry. I don't know how you guys get those huge points. I haven't had much time to diddle with it because of the flooding--it's running and says about 1300 PPD smp8 and 11,000 PPD GPU. I have bigadv in there, but it'll have to wait..... Are you guys getting bidadv's?

Yes, I'll be repeating a few things you already covered. Please don't yell at me. Scrolling up and down while trying to write sucks.

Are you running v7 or v6? v7 saying 1300 PPD could be right because it doesn't figure QRB worth a crap. 1300 PPD on Fahmon or HFM running v6 could be a problem, or "figure QRB" is not checked, or something is wrong in config and it doesn't think you get the QRB. TPF is a better indicator. Depending on your clocks, you should see 30-45 minutes.

QRB needs a passkey and 10 WUs completed on any SMP client using that passkey, on any machine. If you entered the passkey wrong, you won't see a bonus. To avoid that, I copied the original passkey email to wordpad and saved it to the desktop on all boxes. I just copy and paste it when I set up a new client so I dont screw up the number.

Yes, I'm getting bigadv on 3 boxes. v7 requires running smp 8. v6 will let you use smp 6 or 7, as long as the client sees 8 cores in the machine. In v7, click configure, slots tab, highlight smp, and click the edit button. Make sure client_type = bigadv and max_packet_size = big are both listed. If you didn't format the entries correctly, it will look like they went in, but they don't show up on the parameter list and you won't get the WUs you want.

yes every wu is a bigadv for me. look here to see if your doing a bigadv wu :- http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html

the gro a5's are the bigadv wu's. numbers are 2684,2685,2686,2692, if you don't complete them in 4 days you won't get the bonus points, 2684 is a pig for me, so if i'm using a lot of cpu time playing flash games say, then i won't always complete it in the 4 day bonus point deadline but easy to complete by 6 day final deadline, must admit i think i've only failed two and just got the points but no bonus.

unc,

I am running v7. smp:8 is TPF 1 hour 13 minutes, so something must be wrong.

What does QBR mean?

bigadv and big show up in parameter list. You use _ (client_type); I think it is - (client-type), a hyphen, right? I know it is picky.

I cut and pasted my passkey from their e-mail, but I will check it again.

Thanks, these are the things we need to know.

:)

P.S. I am overclocked to about 4 GHz.

Edit 2: terry, it looks like I am doing a 6900 now--is that a bigadv?

even with no oc i think you'd complete them in time for the bonus points and at 4ghz you definitely should, i'm running at 3.8ghz and i think my 920 is slower anyway than your 2600k clock for clock.

1hr 13minutes for frame won't get you the bonus points, you need to complete a frame in under 57 minutes, except for the 2684 i think i'm taking about 35 minutes a frame.

how many gpu's you running? are they tied to a core? try using the -smp 7 flag

ffr2 shoot us a piece of your log from the CPU...it should look a lot like Terry's at the beginning... If not you need to reconfigure.

I run this client on my 460's:

http://www.stanford.edu/~friedrim/[email protected]

and this one on my CPU's for the -bigadv's:

http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/FAH6.34-win32-SMP.exe

When setting up your CPU follow this guide

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinSMPGuide#ntoc3

and use "big" for WU selection, max RAM shown available, and under Additional client parameters -smp 7 -bigadv -verbosity 9

but I'm sure you already know that...

He has v7. You have to run smp 8 to get bigadv with v7. smp 7 will download regular smp WU and repeatedly crash. v7 doesn't like most odd numbers. I can run smp 3 on a quad, but on an i7 I never tried 5, but 7 will always crash.

QRB- quick return bonus, the faster you complete it, the more points you get. Requires the passkey and completing 10 a3/a5 smp WUs on time before you qualify for the bonus.

bigadv WUs- I'm mostly seeing 6900 and 6901 with times of 28 (980X smp 10) to 37 minutes (930 and 950). Both are a5 WUs.

First, we need to get the right WU on your machine, then we can worry about the times.

I'm running v7 on 2 machines that have been known to crash because folding will start on its own after a reboot. I run v6 on the most stable machine and the laptop just because I have always found the basic console client gives me the greatest control.

Edit 2: terry, it looks like I am doing a 6900 now--is that a bigadv?

yes it is, so now we need to figure out why it's taking you so long per frame, that's why your not getting the big bonus points.

i'd try stopping the gpu folding for a few days and see if you can complete it within the 4 day limit to get the bonus points.

:b33r:

is your cpu always running at 4ghz or does it power save and throttle down, might need to go into the bios and turn off any/all power saving features.

Thanks for the great tips, guys. It is possible that it throttles down. I am out of town for the weekend so I'll hit it hard when I get back. We'll get it to kick asskey.

Thanks again folder-types!

you're getting the bigadv wu's but because your not completing them in under 4 days your not getting the bonus points, you need to complete a frame in under av of 57 minutes, you said it's taking you over an hour per frame on a wu that should take your machine under 35 minutes a frame.

2684 the one you've got now is a pig tho and takes me about 50 minutes a frame if i'm not using my pc.

i am doing one now that i doubt i'll complete in time for bonus points because i've been playing flash games which really slows down my frame times, 1 frame actually took about 1hr and 20minutes, last frame took an hr and i'm not even playing a flash game. :pullhair:

but for all other wu's i can complete them easily in the 4 day dead line, usually takes just under 3 days.

so until we find out what's causing your pc to take so long to complete a frame i don't believe you'll ever get the big points even tho you're actually getting and completing the correct bigadv wu's.

43:30 TPF

is fast enough to get the bonus points, but keep an eye on it and see if your pc throttles down or something, causing you to miss the deadlines.

  • 2 weeks later...

what's the latest ff2? i still haven't seen any jumps in your points showing you completed a bigadv wu and got the bonus points, i'd expect at least 55k to show up when you completed one in good time.

you been too busy fishing to keep an eye on the pc? :P

I dunno. Could have been my folding key was wrong and I have to do 10 bigadvs again

Will any program monitor v7?

Right now it says it is doing a 6900 0xa5 @ 36:32.

Nada on the big points.

I have looked and looked in BIOS for a throttle down and found nothing. My board is a Gig Z68X-UD3-B3

Windows says I'm at 4.10 GHz.
