Win 7 Total Security False Virus Scanner

Recommended Posts

My laptop has this false anti virus scanner protector called "Win 7 Total Security" that just popped up out of nowhere. It has made my computer extra slow, stopping me from accessing any new site or search engines...so I am using another terminal right now.

I dont know what else it might do, and it is acting fast! What can I do from my position, what files/exes do I need to transfer over to laptop?

Start with Malwarebytes.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

I'm not able to access any website on my browser let alone open up a virus scanner. It has disabled my Microsoft Security Essentials I think (it has dissappeared from the toolbar)... What can I do?

It has installed itself in the toolbar...and I think its filename (read it up in the toolbar customization) hcq.exe or something simular. It disguises itself as a false Win 7 Security VIrus scanner, and is well dressed with the tabs and graphics. False popus, windows virus messages etc etc. I need to get this cleaned ASAP.

edit: I have moved this issue into the HiJackThis forums. Thank you!
