Hi,

The program can't check for definition updates

Error found: Code 0x80040154.

Would anyone know what is wrong?

hello

i do not use win defender but you can try and have a look here :)

How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

I just attempted to uninstall Windows Defender and this came up:

Add or Remove Programs

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

You can download the latest Windows Installer here;

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

Once installed you should be able to remove Windows Defender from Add/Remove and then double check Program Folders for WD and manually delete it.

Hope this helps

Don

I installed 'WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe' and then went to Add or Remove Programs, and tried to remove Windows Defender but, the same message appears (as in my second post). What else was I supposed to do?

-thanks

Have you tried to remove the Windows Installer completely and reinstall?

You could also try to reinstall WD and then remove it from the Start/All Programs/WD/Uninstall.

Another ? is, what OS are you using?

WD cannot be removed from Windows Vista, disable it here:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/e...1bf0dc1033.mspx

If you're running Xp you can also try this;

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

I am running WinXP: Pro, I tried the second option that you listed since my OS is XP Pro, and I received the same message when I tried to run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

It seems as though I can't delete the 'Windows Defender' folder, here is the message:

Error Deleting File or Folder

Cannot delete MpClient.dll: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

You can also try uninstalling the Windows Defender program by running the uninstall command option from Run.

Click Start, Type Run, and type the following:

msiexec /uninstall windowsdefender.msi /quiet /log uninstall.log

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555957

Defender is a worthless antispy program so you're just as well without it

What do I do now to see if it worked?
