Open Source Drivers

Recommended Posts

With AMD aquiring ATI, and AMD's recent announcement that they are opening up their API's to allow for opensource drivers, things are looking up. Now a major manufacturer OEM is requiring that it's hardware suppliers provide opensource drivers. This is big news, as I am guessing that manufacturer is Dell. With the number of machines Dell sells, you can be assured that many hardware makers will comply, because if they don't they will loose some large and lucrative contracts. ;)

Intel has recently said why open source drivers work, and why it is good for the industry

This afternoon Intel's Chief Linux and Open-Source Technologist, Dirk Hohndel, talked about why Intel's commitment to open-source drivers creates a difference and advantage for Intel's architecture platforms.

Intel had also mentioned that AMD's (well, referenced as a "major graphics card vendor") open-source driver efforts as "good news." He also mentioned that a major OEM is requiring that by next year their hardware suppliers must either have an open-source driver available or be able to provide an open-source driver within the next twelve months. The likely company that comes to mind is Dell but Dirk refused to comment any further.

It is likely to be Dell or HP, HP are late into the pre installed desktop Linux market and when they have their machines ready to ship they will want to come in with a bang.

Dell have financial interest in OSS drivers in that at present their preinstalled options take a little messing around with due to some proprietary humps.
