Problem with Windows Update

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I know enough to know I have a problem......

I occaisionally use a prog call windoc From Norton I think. Its been a help over the years. There are a few missing file problems that it cannot fix. Related to the Microsoft Net Framework, not sure what this is.lol.

But when I tried to update it at Windows Update, the correct updates will not install. It also seems that this may be related to some kind of malware that I cannot detect. I do a few imprtant things online now and am worried about having my info stolen. Any ideas? I don't no want to reinstall windows XP Sp2 etc

Thank you....

Thanks, I am currently following your instructions, but I thought I would update my problem. As I was poking around here I found a post about windows update probs and I followed the advice. I went into windows/softwar dist/download and deleted everything then tried windows update again, still same problem but it won't even list any updated. just a page loading prob of some sort, I tried MS help and got lost in the process........

Disconnect from the Internet....

Using Windows Explorer go to and delete the file in red:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\DAVE\APPLICATION DATA\BLAH ONCE POKE

Next, reboot and download ATF Cleaner:

http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/

Click "Main" > check 'select all' this first time using it, then click "Empty Selected". Do the same for FireFox or Opera if you use either of those browsers. (you will lose your saved cookies, but they will come back again)

Now go to Control Panel > Internet Options.

On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".

Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

Download Auslogics Disk Defrag

http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/

Defrag and reboot/restart your computer.

Run another scan with your antivirus and with SuperAntispyware.

Let us know if you can update Windows now

ok again I am following your instructions, one prob, when I deleted temp internet files I could not find the click box to include offline content, so I just moved on...is this ok? also what do you think is in my system? When I went to delete the POKE file I found the folder empty, I did remove a virus during the scan so it is possible that my trendmicro got it......let me know what you think...tks

Just to be on the safe side of this infection....

Download HijackThis! from here:

http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".

Close the WinZip self Extractor window. You can now delete HijackThis_sfx.exe.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe. Click "Do a system scan and save a logfile" then:

Start a new topic in our HJT forms

http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=25

Copy and paste the HJT log from notepad in that new topic

Please be patient as we have a lot of people with malware infections

and all of our HJT Trusted Advisors work on many

you could look in windows updates in note pad

go to my computer/open cdrive/windows folder/scroll down to windows update in notepad/see what errors are showing.

they should show as stop errors or why windows fail to install

choose the most recent dates that you tried

OK I still have to do another SuperAnti... scan, but I decided that after I ran my trendmicro(btw all it found was the MS vulnerabilities, and gives a link to win update again) I would take a quick try at updated again, here is what I STILL get:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

For self-help options:

Frequently Asked Questions ( a few links here)

Find Solutions

Windows Update Newsgroup

For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

I will be running the other scan asap, but why do you think the MS update site is encountering this prob?

It occurs after the site spends several mins doing that fake green scanner bar thing, then I get the above message.......errrrrrrrrrrghhh! lol

Also, occaisionally IE fails on me and I get one of those send/dont send boxes, at that time I have to reboot in order to use IE again, I cant pinpoint the cause, it seems random. Just yesterday as long as I opened a window from a link on this site, It would open, if I clicked the icon on taskbar I would get the erro box??? I have dloaded and intalled IE again twice now, I even went back to a version without tabs. I never tried removing IE and then reinstalling, but I am afraid to do that lol.

Could it be that my prob is actually an IE prob?

It's possible, or it could be malware that isn't being detected. That's why I suggested taking a deeper look at your system in the HijackThis forum.

OK, does this end this post, do you want me to post after another run of SuperAnti??

tks :pullhair:
