andybigfoot2
Hello, I bought a Dell computer about a year ago (big mistake). It has windows media center, but no tv tuner; therefore it has no use. Since I paid extra for windows media center, I no want to buy a tv tuner. Any suggestions for any products? Also, I am wondering, are there any other uses for media center? I would really appreciate some help. Thanks Sincerely, Andrew
ChrisR
Hauppauge Wintv PVR 150 will work flawlessly with XP MCE...you can find it between $50-$100.
andybigfoot2
Thanks, Ill look into it. But is there anything any cheaper? Also, I don't have much power left due to my new graphics card. I have a Dell with a pretty bad power source, and Im wondering how much power does the tuner take up? ChrisR
No, you won't find anything cheaper than that. Not that's compatible with Windows Media Center anyway. Your power supply should be fine, PCI cards don't draw too much power.
Cowboy3000
You can't go wrong with Haupaugge, as far as TV tuners are concerned. It is a top-of-the-line tuner card. You might find a card that is cheaper (and not compatible with MCE), but it won't be worth the trouble.
andybigfoot2
Ok, Wow thank you. I have this NVidia GeForce 7900 GS graphics card, will they conflict? My brother told me that a tv tuner is another graphics card. Edited June 19, 2007 by andybigfoot2
xXenXx
Ok, Wow thank you. I have this NVidia GeForce 7900 GS graphics card, will they conflict? My brother told me that a tv tuner is another graphics card. A tv tuner is video input, it's not a video card (though some video cards come with tv tuners). So no, unless your tv tuner is also a video card, they won't conflict.
Cowboy3000
The Haupaugge PVR 350 will do decoding as well as encoding, but that doesn't really matter since we're not talking about that. The PVR150 takes the input signal and encodes it. It needs the video card to show the video to the monitor, or other display device.
andybigfoot2
Ok guys, thanks. I don't really know how to use the tuner. What do I need to work it? I know how to install it and put it into my computer, but I don't know what to connect it to. I think I need an antenna or a cable connection. My dad's computer is right next to the router and therefore he can use a splitter to connect his computer to the cable. But me on the other hand, I am on a wireless connection across the house. I don't know what to do. Edited June 19, 2007 by andybigfoot2
xXenXx
You need to plug a composite cable into it, just like you would any normal tv.
andybigfoot2
Huh? Is that like a normal cable? Is there a different way to do it? Can I use it wirelessly? Edited June 20, 2007 by andybigfoot2
andybigfoot2
Sorry to double post but I still am trying to figure out wether it is possible to get cable channels wirelessly.
Cowboy3000
I guess if you could get in on a TV, you could get it with the tuner card. The Hauppauge's come with an antenna you can plug in. Since I live out in the middle of nowhere, I've never tried it.
andybigfoot2
Oh ok. Is there a way to use the wire from a tv? Or do I have to have the original source from the modem or where ever it originates.
xXenXx
The tv tuner doesn't revolutionize the tv interface, it's just a plug for a normal tv cable. You plug the card in, you plug the cable into the card. Shouldn't have anything to do with the modem.
andybigfoot2
Ok, thanks lol. It simpler than I thought.
