Receive Buffer Size not updated by PC Optimize

Recommended Posts

I purchased PC Optimize today and ran it on a PC that was having various problems. Optimize found and dealt with many issues but one remains.

I've tested the PC with the PC Pitstop full test and the internet connection speed is low due to the (WinME) Receive Buffer Size still being set at the default value. Even after running Optimize, a further test showed that this was still an unresolved issue.

How can I get Optimize to change my Receive Buffer Size to a more suitable size for my ADSL connection?

Are you running any Internet speed Acceleraters or other proprietary software from your ISP that could be locking that registry key?

When this occurs, there is usually another program that is overriding the changes Optimize wants to make.

Thanks for the reply, IntelGuy. As far as I know, no I haven't got a web accelerator.

Would it help if I posted my latest test results? That would show what programs are running.

Yes, actually. I should have thought of that. :blushing:

Here's a link to a test I did today after re-running Optimize. This test shows that I still need to adjust my receive window size. It may be my imagination but I think the connection is running a bit faster today but that might just be the time of day...

Thanks! :)

I don't see anything running that would be causing the issue, but I did see these in the installed programs list:

Smiley Guys Screen Saver 180solutions

Salt Water Fish Tank Screen Saver 180solutions

180solutions is most widely known as a purveyor of malware:

Certain browser hijackers and other malware do intefere with certain Internet settings. I can not say for sure if that is the case here, but you may want to run an Exterminate scan just to see what it finds:

If your computer is clean, Optimize is probably having an issue with Windows ME. I can only find a few issues in the database regarding this issue, and they were resolved by refund. If you wish to use the 30-day money-back guarantee, please open a ticket at our customer service page: http://www.pcpitstop.com/store/service.asp

As an experiment, you could try manually changing the settings as outlined when you click the Customized Tuneup Tip and see if the changes 'take' or get changed back by something.
