gordesky1
how much diffrence will i see if i upgrade too the 6600gt? will it be worth the upgrade? or should i just wait till i go for the 6800gs or the 7800? because a guy might trade for my amd 64bit 3000 754 newcastle not the cpu in my sig lol the newcastle cpu does 2.6ghzs stable should i do the trade if he says yes>?
wdeydwondrer
i dunno 'bout trading and all, but if you're planing on a 68gs, WAIT FOR IT!!!
Thuroz
The diff for me was very little in most games and negative in a few games when i went from 9800pro to 6600gt go for a 7800GS or a x800gto if the 7800gs is to much $$ those are the best choices for us poor guys stuck with agp still. gordesky1
ya i think im going too wait till i get the money for the 7800gs:) this 9800 is still keeping up with newer game anyways so it couldint hurt any longer
brandon
Don't go with the 7800GS. It's just not worth it. I overclocked my 6800GS, and I can play Battlefield 2 on all high settings @ 1280x1024 averaging 60FPS. Hell, at 1024x768, I actually go slightly past the 100FPS limit. gordesky1
well i dont mind spending 300$ because i herd it overclocks like mad and alot of good things about it. and im not thinking of going pci express for couple years anyways. im still gona wait problee couple more months tho so it might go even lower:)
gordesky1
and another thing i just tried timeshift demo on my laptop that has a 6800 and installed it on my desktop that has the 9800 and for some reison the 9800 is faster on it??? it jerks and stuff when you move the 9800 does not do this. and both of them are on 800x600 and same settings. i even check with fraps and the 6800 shows 32 and the 98000 shows 40s. is it because the desktop got 2gb and the laptop ony has 512mb? if it aint im not sure if i even want too go nvidia anymore:(
wdeydwondrer
laptops aren't exactly known for their gaming ability.... and that much ram is a BIG help, especialy over 512. honestly, don't spend the 300 on the 7800gs. it's just about the same thing as the 6800gs. the price also won't go down like u are hoping, while the 68gs will since there's a newer card out, the 78gs
gordesky1
ok im going too take your word on the 6800gs for my next card:) should i go for the bfg? and for the laptop i just dont get it it beats the desktop on benchs except 2001. the laptop does 4300points in 05 and the desktop does 2300. and in 03 it does 9800points and the desktop does 5800points. and in 06 it does 1800points the desktop does 850points. so shouldint it be double in games too? and when i get that 2gb of ram will it fix the jerking and make it smoother? seems like timeshift is the hungreest game because it plays fear better and smoother at 1280x1024 with everything up. problee another ram hoging game like bf2 because that even does the same jerking like timeshift i had 1gb in my desktop and ever sence i went with 2gb doom 3 plays on ultra settings on 1024x768 smooth and plays bf2 at 1280x1024 with the highest settings @ 30fps and over:)

You better off using a benchmark thats built into a game and checking the fps. Edited March 9, 2006 by wsrider
bigchrome
seems like timeshift is the hungreest game because it plays fear better and smoother at 1280x1024 with everything up. Ya...... Sure
gordesky1
well it does play better than timeshift. and i just tried farcry bench and again the 9800 beats it:( here the test with the laptop Score = 52.46 FPS (Run 1) Score = 55.53 FPS (Run 2) Average score = 53.99 FPS this was ony 1024x768:( heres the desktop 64.87fps run 1 62.51fps run 2 average score 63.69 2nd 51.51 and 51/28 average. res on first try 1024x768 2nd is 1280x1024 i dont get it:( will memory do this? Edited March 9, 2006 by gordesky1
bigchrome
Yes. Also 1280x1024 should definately show the 6800 ahead. The CPU in the desktop is gonna skew the results too. Edited March 9, 2006 by bigchrome
gordesky1
just tried quake 4 and tried high settings with 800x600 and the frames was 60fps must be locked than tried the desktop at the same settings and res the frames was 60 till i looked a a fire than its 53fps so the laptop wins that match. than i tried 1024x768 the laptop did 60 and than 53 by the same fire. than the desktop did 55 too 60fps and 28 by that same fire. so the laptop beats the 9800 on that game. so is the others ram hogs? wsrider
why do u run 800x600 high settings, i find 1280x1024 with lower settings looks better and is easy to play fps shooters since u see more. Edited March 9, 2006 by wsrider
gordesky1
seems like it still takes alot. i mainly try too run all my games at 1280x1024 or up if i can. it seems like when it skips or lags the harddrive is on too blinking than when the hdd goes off the skiping quits and lag is gone. aint that the memory? because i remember my desktop did that on doom 3 with ony 1gb when open doors and stuff. burned-ati
yea wsrider is right. high resolutions with less graphical settings is much better than 800/600 and higher textures your not playing on a xbox or ps2 here @640/480 lol but i seem to push max detail with it least 1024/768 fine with this x850xt with fear 8xaf 4xaa shadows on, although i would prefer higher resolutions the 9800 pro is a complete dinosuar no offense. but yea you will see a good amount of performance over it with a 6600gt, especially a 6800gs and 7800gs so if your planning on one of those go for the 7800gs.. a video card is a video card if you dont get something your happy with you will sell it and keep upgrading, most likley u would buy the 6600gt and ditch it soon after.. also dont forget about are old friend 6800 ultra it beats the 6800gs and runs along side the regular 7800gs and i seen a agp one sell on ebay for 200 bucks! yep the 7800gs dropping deffinetly brought there market down for it... i would proubly even trade my x850xt for a 6800 ultra it may be a down grade in performance but it will have sm3 and better driver support.. and yes i could run 3dmark06 ! lol
Thuroz
7800gs vrs 6800 Ultra http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/02/13/nvi...buy/page13.html
gordesky1
too me this 9800 is still holding up in newer games:) right now its close or faster than my 6800 lol except quake 4 the 6800 beats it there. but i just came from notebook forums and they said its diffenly my ram causeing the 6800 being slower and skiping. because they tested the game with the same laptop that i got with 1gb of ram and they said it plays good at 1280x720 with full settings with a little jettering some places:) so im going too try and get 2gb so that should solve my problem:) and for the desktop im problee going for the 6800gs or the 7800gs if that go down problee will by july. the laptop needs the ram right now more than the desktop needs the card
burned-ati
the only thing that in wondering.. why would nvidia release a video card like 2 years later, that barley beats the x850xt pe, i noticed when the 7800gs barley beats the x850xt pe its running with it...you have got to OC the 7800gs for it to really beat the x850xt pe, but out of all these review ive never seen a good oCed x850xt pe against a 7800gs...i think that the x850xt would murder it, my brother had a x850xt at 570mhz core / 1200mhz memory and he got about 7100 in 3dmark05.. and yes you need 2 gigs of memory dude. or you will get mad memory lagg! lol if your running 1GB max out a game and then alt tab in to windows open task manager and look at your page file you will notice its close to 1GB so your comp is gonna run mad skippy through ur games its not the 6800, oh yeah 6800 murders the 9800pro ive seen a 9800pro get about 2200in3dmark05 the 6800 can nearly double that.. the 9800 pro isnt that bad of a card... it can run the stuff ok i guess its just i would deffinetly use the 6800 for ur main card lol, and u also have a chance up unlocking an extra 4 pipe lines ,and a extra shader for the card also.. try it with riva tuner. in that case it would over double that 9800pro Oh yea one more thing get a 6800ultra there like mad cheap and are right behind the 7800gs, plus you can OC them like hellz so i would look out on ebay for a cheap one! there nothing special about a 7800gs.. i my self am about to sell my whole system and move to pci express 7800gt will be much better hope fully OCed good pulling 8000in 3dmark05 Edited March 10, 2006 by burned-ati
wdeydwondrer
burned, you do realize that with an unlocked quad, and a slight o/c, you have a 6800 ultra out of a 6800gs for cheaper? and the 7800gs isn't worth the extra 100+ over the 6800gs. simple as it gets.
burned-ati
yep but he doesnt have pci express. the agp 6800gs cannot unlock the 4 pipes, nor OC any ways near the pci express version. so no u cannot make a 6800gs agp run with a 6800 ultra agp
bigchrome
Yes you can.
gordesky1
ya i too herd the agp one unlocks and overclock sometimes:) i plus i cant find a 6800ultra for under 300$ any were lol my uncle bidded on a bfg 6800ultra agp 3months ago and won it for 300$ but he got ripped on it and loss 300$ because the guy was makeing all stuff up and was saying he didint get the check than said hes gona send it out but he didint and now he wont replily too him or ebay:( and for the laptop when i get the money in a couple days im gona go max out on it with 2gbs:) and maybee next year a 7800gtx for the laptop:)
