  1. Hi, recently, I decided to upgrade my PC from XP to Win7, while keeping XP for backward compatibility reasons. In a first step, I installed an SSD and upgraded the RAM from 4 GB to 12 GB. I did not initialzie the SDD, but used the remaining 8 GB RAM as RAM disk, which boosted XP a little bit. In a second step, I installed Win7 (on the SDD), using the dual boot option. Right after I bootet to Win7 for the first time, the Intel Matrix Storage Console reported a SMART event in one of my two HDDs in the RAID 1 volume. Win7 does not seem to care and runs superfast. However, XP is extremly slow, now, mainly during booting and shutting down. I have the impression I/O is the limitting factor. I can choose to ignore the SMART event in XP, but whenever I boot Win7, it reappears. This raises a couple of questions: Why did the SMART event appear right after running Win7 for the first time (and reappear whenever I boot Win7)? Did Win7 destroy the HDD or can only Win7 detect that something is wrong with the HDD? Could it be a false alarm? Why is XP super slow since then, whereas Win7 is unaffected? This may partially be because Win7 is installed on the SDD, but it still has to access the data and programs on the (faulty?) Raid volume (I moved the user profile to the raid volume). Could Win7 somehow "disturb" the XP installation, or is it more likely due to a faulty drive? Is there any way to check if the SMART event is real, without destroying the RAID volume?
