Dell Dimension 4550, Windows XP, Intel Pentium 4,
  1. OK, Tom, I followed your directions and performed the tasks. There were 2 glitches. First, when doing the start and run, I went to delete the files and the following file could not be deleted it said due to someone else running it. (No one else is on this computer at this time.) "Perflib_Perfdata_268 DAT file 16KB". I deleted all the others. Second, at the step to double-click the seperators, I did that to the left one and all the files on the screen disappeared. When I searched for the Contents ie5 file, it was empty. But all else was performed. Anything else to do?
  2. Doug, If I decide to upgrade my RAM, is this something a somewhat handy but not real computer-literate person can do at home? Also, finally got the low disk space message again. It says" low disk space on ©. I click clear this space and it mostly deletes unnecessary temp files. Afterwards, it said "your Windows drive now has 846 MB of available space."
  3. OK, I ran the C Cleaner. Here are the specs on my machine: MS Windows XP SP3 Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.00 GHz 256 MB RAM NVCIDIA GeForce 4 MX420. I also looked to see what was running and the only thing was the pop-up blocker.
  4. Sorry I haven't replied back yet folks, but the low spce message hasn't come bck up again. My daughter got her own PC for Christmas so I have removed most f her stuff and I think that freed up a lot of space. I will try the suggestions you guys put forth and see what happens.
  5. I am frequently getting messages after surfing the net that I am running low on available memory. I let it clear out the temp files, etc. and now am trying to remove programs that we no longer need or use. But I don't want to inadvertently remove something we still use even though it says, for example, "last used on 1/1/2003". I don't really trust those dates because even though sometimes it says last used 4 or 5 years ago, I know I just used it last week or month. Three examples of something I'm not sure I'm still using is: Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2- 188MB Microsoft.NE
  6. It seems to be doing as well as before I first had these problems. And yes, I think I want to remove Cyberdefender. After we finish, you can suggest a good antiviral/spyware/etc. program. Will get back to you in a day or 2 on the last instructions

  8. Looks like the CF log got cut off. 9. OK, finally got the next set of instructions done, almost. I wasn't able to do the Kaspersky Online Scanner. The "Scan Now" button never displayed. Here are the other logs you requested. ComboFix 09-09-25.01 - Mike 09/27/2009 21:07.1.1 - FAT32x86 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.255.124 [GMT -4:00] Running from: c:\documents and settings\Mike\Desktop\ComboFix.exe Command switches used :: c:\documents and settings\Mike\Desktop\CFScript.txt AV: Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {D3C23B96-C9DC-477F-8EF1-69AF17A6EFF6} .
  10. OK, I'm finally back to continue. Been fighting the crud this week, so have been unable to get back to this. I checked the Spyware Dr. and it is "with anti-virus". But I've also wondered why it is missing some viruses. As to the other anti-viral systems, they are some freebies I have tried and I wasn't satisfied with or ones I bought but did not renew. And Cyberdefender I've tried to get rid of but haven't been able to remove. Anyway, I'll follow your directions and carry on.
  11. Since this fix, I am not getting the pop-ups that I had been Also, I have Spyware Dr. and it runs daily at 3AM with constant updates. The only time I have disabled it is when instructed to by your last post. It may take several days to accomplish this next task. I have had a death in the family and will be tied up with that and then I am going out of town the last of next week. But I will get to this ASAP. Thanks again for your help.
  12. 13. OK, some success at last! Posted below are the results. 14. OK, thanks so much for being patient with me. Thank god there are people like you who are knowledgeable in these areas.
  15. Gosh, even the fix is starting to get frustrating. I finally figured out how to get to the point of extracting the files, it even says "extracting files" with a progress bar. The first time I tried it, the progress bar went about half way and stopped, and tonight it didn't even start. Am I doing something wrong or is my 'puter that whacked?
