  1. thanks 8210Guy. Very helpful. After reading it, I checked out the Secunia site again & found an earlier thread that had a similar answer. Just a question of clicking on the Advanced tab & following simple instructions. I uninstalled Flash Player & the old bits that you mentioned, reinstalled it, ran Secunia & got the 'all clear'. Yippee! Thanks to everyone who helped.
  2. Just checked the Secunia forum again. It seems that lots are having this problem and, also, that the Adobe site is struggling with so many hits to download Flash 10 & the others. I'll leave it a few days I think. Thanks
  3. Tried that but it's not showing as installed, neither does a Search (including hidden files) find it. Has it got another name in the title, do you think?
  4. Hi. Jaycee & others recently helped me on 'buffer overrun'. Next to my post is one about Adobe Reader. This post draws from both. I installed Secunia, per jaycee's advice. It found several problems, including the Adobe ones. So I followed the link to update & I now have Reader 8.1.3, Shockwave Player & Flash Player 10. But every time I power up,Secunia tells me I have an insecure/end-of-life program that is leaving me exposed. It's Macromedia Flash Player 7.x (ActiveX control). Secunia guides me to download Flash Player 10. I've done that three times now but still get the warning. I've whizzed off comments to Adobe's Help team but the interesting thing is I've just checked on Secunia's forum & many others are having the same problem. Knowing how good this forum is, I wonder if it's already been raised here before. I'm dashing off now so unfortunately haven't time to check but if it's already been solved here, could someone point me to it please? Thanks
  5. thanks adam22.most helpful - as is always the case on this forum. PS jaycee - I passed on your Secunia link to friends. They've found lots of issues so thank you again.
  6. just checked OpenOffice.org. I haven't got a clue where it came from. It seems to be a freeware alternative to MS Office. I think I'll uninstall it as I don't use it - but I'll wait a day or two in case someone says it's worth having. Perhaps my daughter's college uses it (but she is not an Administrator on my PC) - I'll check later.
  7. thanks JC (or may I call you Maude?!) I am fanatical about updating - every day without fail even when I have auto-updates. But I now realise that they are for Microsoft, Norton & suchlike & not for the ''add-ons''. I ran Secunia - as you suggested. It found 8 threats: 2 x Adobe, 2 x IPod, 1 x OpenOffice (which I'll check out in a moment & 3 x Java. It seems that whenever I've been prompted to download eg the latest Adobe, it didn't remove the old version. For a novice like me, that seems real nonsense. Still, I ran Secunia again & thereare no issues. Thanks Jaycee for taking the time & trouble to help me. Much appreciated.
  8. just noticed that putting b & c inside brackets has given me cool shades & the copycright icons|
  9. When I tried to sign in this morning, I got a message that a buffer overrun had been detected in my C drive (Program Files\Yahoo\browser\ybrowser.exe) which had corrupted the program's internal state. "The program cannot continue execution & must now be terminated." The heading on the message window was "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library". BT's Help team said my saved password on my sign-in was wrong. It was correct yesterday but I did as they asked me & manually input/saved it again. I could now access my BT Yahoo account. They then asked me to send a test email to myself - it didn't arrive neither did the next three. They put me through to their Yahoo Help Desk. They found the problem: my email address was in the list of "blocked addresses".They said I must have hit the 'treat as spam' button on one of my own emails. It was only after that I realised this might be nonsense! (a) I don't send myself emails ( none of the test emails were in the Spam in-box & © also on the 'blocked address list was my original address "[email protected]" rather than the "@btinternet" tag I've been using for at least five years. I've just googled "buffer overrun" - got the MS programmers page on it. All I could understand it that hackers can take advantage of buffer overruns. Is what has happened to me a symptom that I may have been infected? I have Norton Symantec & Lavasoft protections which I update daily & I use IE7 & XP Home. Thanks.
  10. sorry Mark but I'm a PC-thicko. Why should I need to run yet another spyware scan when I have SpywareBlaster & Ad-Aware as well as PCPitstop software. Sorry again Mark. Perhaps my current problem is because I clicked on something like that before? Thanks for your help - please don't take what I've said as a criticism - I just want to learn!!
  11. I always groan when I see a shed-load of Microsoft updates - 16 just now - as something always goes wrong afterwards. Having installed them, I was prompted to restart, which I did. When up, I decide to play Solitaire (day off today). In the middle of a game, up popped a window to the effect "Major Optimise problems - auto-scanning now" followed quickly by a list of what needed attention. The next screen said "buy product" abd gave the Uniblue details. If I hadn't already bought your Optimize2, I would have thought it was a PCPitstop product. There's no such program shown in Control Panel/programs but I've found the following via Search: 2 x Application Data in C:\Docs & Settings (Jan 2008 & today) 1 in C:\Program Files 24 June 2008 2 x C:\WINDOWS\Tasks. 24 June 2008 & today I can't imagine how this got on.How can I remove it - can I simply delete them? Is this something that your Sales team should be aware of, that Uniblue are doing this & using the Optimise name? I've probably posted in the wrong section - if I have, could the moderator move it please? Thanks
  12. all sorted now. Many thanks to you both for your help. Much appreciated.
  13. Thanks IntelGuy. This is going to sound really stupid but how/where do I download Optimize2 please? I can only find the free scan or the 'buy the product'.
  14. Thanks shogan191 Optimize2 is shown in the list of "All programs" via 'start' . But when I tried to the Uninstal there I got an error message: File "C\Program Files\PCPitstop\Optimize2\unins000.dat" does not exist. Cannot uninstal. The same message appeared when I used the Remove buttom on the 'Add/Remove' programs in the control panel. Should I just try to download it?
  15. I have Driver Alert, Disk MD & Optimize2. Hitting either the shortcut icon or the product in Control Panel brings up the message "IE cannot display this webpage". I'd appreciate your help please. Thanks Windows XP Home/Compaq Presario (SP3 finally sorted out!)
