  1. It's so happens that you want to Google (googling) for something, when you type the address of google the web page [/b]automatically changes the page to it's local region for example http://www.google.com.fr/ (for France) or http://www.google.com.it/ (for Italian) etc...to enhance in local language queries as well.

But if you prefer the page to display in ENGLISH only every time you open Google, clear the cache first and type the address http://www.google.com/webhp and bookmark this page. Next time you click on the bookmark page you will be presented the site in English only. :)

  2. Gone are the days where we used to type the full address of website starting from http://www.*****.com (org. or Net)

    Here is an easy way...

Just type the name of the site in the address bar and press

Ctrl+ Enter for addresses ending with .com

Ctr+Shift+Enter for addresses ending with .org

Alt+Shift+Enter for addresses ending with .net

    Example.

If you want to visit CNN site, in the browser (Firefox or IE) address bar just type only cnn and press the key combination Ctrl+Enter which will subsequently fill the rest of the address as http://www.cnn.com/

  3. Those who are making tweaks in the system registry often need to click on the plus sign every time they want to see it's sub entries, and it's quiet time consuming. Here is a trick.

Click once on the main hive you want (eg: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) to explore having a +sign on the left then press * in the keyboard all it's sub values will automatically be displayed in a tree view, so that navigation becomes very easy.

once you finished click once again on the main hive and press - (minus sign) it will be restored back to normal.

  4. I think it's a better idea for us to share some of those outstanding and informative sites with our regular PCPITSTOPPERs unless the site Administrator feels other way. So all we need to do is to give a specific but short info about the site and a link to it, so that those who have not yet come across the same will benefit from this, and of course, a word of thanks will never hurt if found interesting enough.

Please make sure the site or service you are referring is not related to Shareware products. Let me share my contribution

An interesting site describes a vast amount of info on File Formats available.

    http://www.ace.net.nz/tech/TechFileFormat.html

A very good site when you think of sending E-Greetings.

    http://www.passionup.com/

Hope it's a right step towards sharing

  5. It's very often we come to face that while attaching an executable file send through Outlook or Gmail etc..we get a message that exe files can be contained viruses and this attachment may not be able to receive by the recipient.

Here is a way to avoid such thing.

Just add .jpg at the existing extension of the exe file (eg: setup.exe.jpg), and add a note to the recipient to remove the extension .jpg once they downloaded it.

no more frustrating messages while sending exe files.

    Hope it's helpful :P

  6. Here is a simple way to protect your secret file without using any third party utility.

I assume that most of us know that windows identifies file types with it's associated extension and opens up with the specified application (example: .txt for text files and .hlp for help files etc..) So what will happen if we change the extension deliberately? either windows will try to open the file with it's currently associated extension if not succeed it will result in an error. So that's it.

**(open any folder> Tools>Folder Options>View-remove tick mark 'Hide extension for known file types' click OK, now all files with it's current extension will be visible to you)**

This is the same trick we are using here. For eg: my_collection.avi to my_collection.chm if anyone double clicks on the file it will come up with an error message but when you want to use it again you can just change back to the old extension.

I should warn you that it's not 100% foolproof though can be used in many ways to secure it, if you really explore a little deep.

  7. If you create a a Shortcut for your removable drive and place it in SendTo menu you can transfer the files same like you do with the HDD.

Provided you have no virtual drive existing alreday otherwise it will change the drive letter everytime you plug the USB into your computer in which case the shortcut won't work properly.

  8. ViKing must have held the key for long enough which instigates the Utility manager, well u need some experience :) Just kidding.

About the LockDown and LogOFF there is a difference

If you use Winkey + L only it locks down your account temperorly so that you can resume when you are back on the otherhand if you use Winkey + L + L then really closes all the session and starts afresh.

    Hope it's clear :adios:

  9. Well, from the above comments I guess it's an individual preference rather than reasoning at least in some cases, Anyway from my past experience in the field I opted out the following for reason expalined.

Norton : #1 resource hungry so far although the detection rate is Good

McAfee : Okay , but seems to be slower in detection in fact I had a virus attack even when I had McaFee

    installed and working (GodZilla worm)

AVG AV : seems reasonably Good But their AntiSpyware is far better than the Rest (previously known as

    EWIDO)

Kapersky : Very Good in detection and over all performance

All though there are some other candidates I haven't tested yet, but seems to be doing good from others experience.

Nonetheless I prefer to stick with NOD once again and looking for their All-in-One Suite which is in beta stage namely Eset Smart Security (Beta) which combines a fully integrated security solution and includes Antivirus, Anti-spyware, Personal firewall and Antispam It updates the signature every day and does a wide scope of protection...so far I have never experienced a Virus attack since switched to NOD32 and incase of a switchover in future I think I would prefer Kaperski

Personally in my opinion as a user one should have the following appz. in his system to be more safe.

At least one Anti Virus soft

one or even 2 Antispyware appz.

A good firewall apart from Windows built-in firewall

Opera or Firefox as IE is more prone to gain attention by the Hackers

  10. It's always easy to use Key Board shortcuts instead of driving the mouse and clicking on the icons. So how can we customize some Key Board shortcuts for the frequently (non-frequently) accessed programs? Here is a way.

Suppose you want to start Photoshop, normallly we double click the icon using a mouse right?

    Here is an easy way.

Just locate the shortcut icon of the program in the Programs menu (start>programs) locate and right click on the Photoshop icon > Properties > Shortcut ..In Shortcut key, Type Any letter that's easy for you to REMIND the application. for instance A for AdobePhotoshop. once you press A it will be automatically set to ALT+CTRL+A.

Next time you want to start Photoshop just press these 3 keys together (Which you can use single hand) no need to search for the Photoshop icon and click on it. Easy?

This method can be adopted on all most any shortcuticons as long as you can easily remember the corresponding keys and you are comfortable with it and also it's much easier to perform. (incase the shortcut key you assigned is already in place for some other apps. you can use CTRL+Shift+(the desired letter) or ALT+SHIFT+(Desired Letter) so that there is no conflict.

say for Instance you assign E for Excel ie; (ALT+CTRL+E) now you can assign CTRL+SHIFT+E for internet Explorer as well. like wise you can assign any desired chacter for the appz.

Some of my favorites assignments are

    N for Nero ((ALT+CTRL+N)

    C for caluclator (ALT+CTRL+C) (instead of Run>calc)

    W for word

    F for Firefox etc...

    Hope it's useful

  11. How about this ?

You can use NC (Norton Commander) for DOS to access the FolderLock Locked Folder. Browse your Locked Folder by using nc.exe and you can see everything there! You can copy, delete, move, etc. from there!

I was able to view all of my Windows XP personal locked files and folders and photos from a Unix Networked PC the only thing was I was not able to delete them so I give folder lock a pat on the back for that one but they really should work on making it much more secure test it from a Unix networked PC

You could've removed the system attribute set by the crappy software by this :

    Start > Run > cmd {press enter}

    attrib -s -h -r (folder name) Press Enter}

The folder should be visible in Windows Explorer now. And then you could browse the folder easily.

  12. Ever since i come to know about this soft I have been using this and is fully satisfied with it. It's not only a single exe portable file it takes up less resource and is much faster than Acrobat.

Well, there is another thing you can download is PDF Editor which also works pretty well the way it's predecessor, namely Foxit PDF Editor.

    Long live FOXIT :)
