  1. You are absolutely right. Running multiple real-time programs of the same type at the same time can cause conflicts, false positives, and crashes. That means only one firewall, one realtime anti-virus, one real-time anti-spyware program, etc.

15 was a bit of an exageration, it's more around 10. Most of the programs I have installed aren't real-time protection, I just keep them around as on-demand scanners, or other uses.

  2. You are not kidding! Symantec a number of years ago was awesome, but became the king of resource hogs!

I use the pccillin all in one jobber, so i will need to replace that as well. Thank you so much for the reccomendations! Maybe I will do the one that is not real time in order to reserve resources.

Symantec is not only a resource hog, I have almost killed a couple of Windows installs trying to remove it.

None of the ones I recommended are real-time, but if you are talking about SpywareBlaster that is not enough. It is simply a way to help prevent being infected, it has no scanner.

I would suggest all three to be safe, of course I have over 15 protection programs installed on my PC, but I'm just super safe

  3. I had just thought that by paying I would get more/better bang for my buck.

Symantec has proved that wrong many times

Avast and AVG are great, the main AV that I use is Avira AntiVir (the free version). Great program!

Do you have any Anti-Spyware programs?

Here's a few free programs I would recommend for that.....

    Javacool SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster protects you from malicious websites, ActiveX, and other stuff. It doesn't even have a running process in the background.

This program is a great scanner, but no Real-Time protection.

    Spybot Search & Destroy

Another great on-demand scanner, also can help protect you from bad websites, and do a whole lot of other things.
