  1. Thought I would share this because of all the wrong/insecure solutions that I found when trying to Google the problem. My problem: I want to run a python script every 30 minutes, but I don't want the cmd window to pop up and interrupt me every 30 minutes. Solution: In the task creation window, check "Run whether the user is logged on or not" and optionally try checking "Do not store password. The task will only have access to local computer resources." Run your task manually and make sure it works (be aware, absolutely no window will pop open, so you'll have to be able to check disk ch
  2. I prefer Windirstat because I'm a visually oriented person (and it color codes the file types so that you can even see if you have a folder containing a bunch of the same, or different types of files). http://windirstat.info/
  3. This is to clarify a very old thread from 2007 about using FASTConv (it showed up as the 2nd search result on google: link). I would have posted there but the thread is rather old. To extract the contents of a F.A.S.T. (Files and Settings Transfer Wizard) archive, here's what you should do: Download FASTConv utility: http://www.fastconv.org/files/FASTConv.zip Make a folder somewhere, let's say the desktop and we'll name it "fastconv." Move the "USMT2.UNC" inside of this folder, and also extract the contents of the FASTConv.zip file into this folder. The contents of the folder (fast
  4. This problem of people not treating others with respect online is increasing everywhere. There's an interesting Cracked article about how people act differently online: http://www.cracked.com/article_17522_6-new...y-internet.html Wish you the best, JoSiEBeLLe!
  5. Recently I bought an external Seagate 1.5TB hard drive, but I felt that diagnostics should be run on the drive because of all the negative reviews I saw concerning Seagate's 1.5TB drives (which a firmware update fixes). My research turned up HDDScan as the best option. HDDScan is a free utility with an impressive list of features: Supported storage devises: ATA/SATA HDD. SCSI HDD. USB HDD (see Appendix A). FireWire or IEEE 1394 HDD (see Appendix A). RAID volumes made of ATA/SATA/SCSI HDDs (surface tests only). USB Flash (surface tests only). Storage device tests: Verification in line
  6. It seems that this tool has been mentioned in other places (User to User help) but I thought it would be worth posting here. See for yourself what it does: http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm Wizmo is primarily based on running it with commands (wizmo.exe reboot) which is quite helpful for making shortcuts. And as a bonus, any people with a G15 keyboard (or similar) can assign keys to any operation, I personally have a key for turning off the monitors. It can do mundane tasks such as locking, shutting down, standby, etc. But quite interesting options are available too, for example: "sun
  7. Ha ha, that makes me feel old when people don't even recognize EIDE off-the-bat, it's all SATA now...
  8. Seeing this posted in the newsletter tickles me, I've been using this on almost a weekly basis because my comp is such a dump. The auto-restart of the explorer.exe doesn't always work, and most of the time on mine it doesn't
  9. I just don't get it!!! I've tried these and more: FASTConv [/V] /S:<C:\FAST\USMT2.UNC> /D:<C:\FAST\des> [/T:<C:\FAST\tmp>] [/K] fastconv /s<:USMT2.UNC> /d:des /t:c:\FAST\tmp fastconv [/V] /s:<C:\FAST\USMT2.UNC> /d:<C:\FAST\des> [/t:<C:\FAST\tmp>] My folder and file tree lookes like this now: C:\FAST \USMT2.UNC \FASTConv.exe \convert.bat \des \tmp Also you said the folder shows that box because some file inside is read-only, well I checked all of the files and none of them are read-only. I even unchecked hide the
  10. Thanks for the command, I tried it correctly I think and it didn't work. Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\--->cd desktop\fastconv C:\Documents and Settings\---\Desktop\FASTConv>FASTconv /v /i:C:\src\IMG0000A. dat /s:C:\src /d:C:\des /t:C:\tmp Source store is invalid. C:\Documents and Settings\---\Desktop\FASTConv> I also have more than a couple of dat files, here's what the folder looks like:
  11. I am having trouble running the wizard. Here's what happens: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\---->cd desktop\fastconv C:\Documents and Settings\----\Desktop\FASTConv>FASTconv [/v] [/i:<C:\src\IMG00 00A.dat>] /s:<C:\src> /d:<C:\des> [/t:<C:\tmp>] Access is denied. C:\Documents and Settings\----\Desktop\FASTConv> FYI: there is more than one dat file, and am I supposed to do anything with the status.file? Also for some reason all of my folders are read-only. I can create
  12. Thanks! I know how to use the terminal on a mac so I know what you're talking about. I just didn't know about stuff like that on my Win comp. You know somebody ought to compile a list of all the things you can access with the Win-R (run) command. That would be reaaally helpful!
  13. I have some archives made with the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard that I am trying to open using a utility called FASTConv. It appears then vanishes leaving to tiny files that are pointless. Can somebody please tell me how to use this tool? I'm running it from "C:\Documents and Settings\---\Desktop\FASTConv" and I don't know how to use the parameters so I made a shortcut with this as the target: ""C:\Documents and Settings\---\Desktop\FASTConv\FASTConv.exe" [/v] [/s:<C:\Documents and Settings\---\Desktop\FASTConv\USMT2.UNC>] [/d:<C:\Documents and Settings\---\Desktop\FASTConv\
  14. I don't know anything, but I would bet that it is certainly your monitor or connection. Try contacting HP support and describe your problem and ask for it to be fixed or replaced. Make sure you backup/remove all pertinent data if you have to send it back...
  15. Well, I did the Intel Matrix Storage Manager update and it still shows an error. I've got the XP Pro on floppy, should I do and install now? Also, the main way I backed up my data was using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I need some documents from the My Docs section from the second account on the previous install of this computer. But when I try to use the Wizard to restore the settings then it says there is no data stored. Can I open the archive? I've tried using FASTConv, but I can't figure out how to use it...
  16. I'm afraid it'll have to wait even more. I have to clean my room thoroughly cause I just got some new stuff that has to come in here. I'ts a tough job! BTW I plan on taking Thursday off from work, so it will certainly be done by Thursday evening. I promise!
  17. I will try to do this tonight, but it will almost certainly be put off till tomorrow. Thanks for the links! I will use the SP2 Pro version: Windows XP Professional SP2 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4&displaylang=en I'm currently getting the drivers for my printer so I can print some of the directions off
  18. I've never touched the jumpers, but I do recall that it never could boot from a disk before. But I just didn't do anything about it because I didn't need to... FYI: I like that Dell restore thing! My comp is back up and running with a working XP OS. Still have RAID errors, I will get those Intel updates. Edit: Umm I don't know what I am supposed to be getting, Porthos... http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.as...r_nav2_download Is this it?: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Fi...01&lang=eng
  19. Ummmm, nope. It's RAID0 so if I unhooked one of the drives it wouldn't even boot. Porthos: I will do the restore when I get home in like 2 hours. Edit: just wondering, could there be some hardware pin or something that's set incorrectly so it's preventing the boot-up from CD?
  20. I'm guessing the reason it's hanging is the same reason there is a error reported on one of the RAID disks. FYI: I also beleive that's the same reason I could not do a full image backup. I couldn't get any backup utilities to complete (they would always hang at some point). I used Norton Ghost, the built-in XP backup, and something else. So what's my options?
  21. Okay, those are all great ways to disable Chkdsk; but let me make it harder. My comp will not boot from any CD/DVD in the CD drive. Also since the Chkdsk hangs, I can never get far enough to load windows and open a command prompt.
  22. I ran Chkdsk because one of my RAID0 drives was reporting a error. The Chkdsk is hanging at 23% on verifying free space (stage 5 of 5). I cannot get past this part so my comp is now un-usable. How can I disable the Chkdsk from running when I boot? Psrt 2 of my problems is that my comp will not boot from any disk in the CD drive. Porthos and I are working on my comp, but we need more minds put to the task!
  23. Porthos and I are working together on this. I will certainly post updates, and ask questions if needed. Thanks, everybody!
  24. If you think the Dell stuff is crud, then it probably is. I don't really know what it does so that's the main reason I wanted it. That sounds sweet having a custom XP disk, can you help me make one after this is over? (Or during, depending on how easy it is) FYI: there is absolutley nothing holding me to keep the current setup. I will do a format and install how-ever you think I should. I just want to get a working OS. And for the future, could I just convert my install from a single to a RAID0 when-ever I want?
  25. I suppose that is the way to go. Just wondering, how can I tell what is wrong with my failing HD? Can I not use it anymore? I guess I should get SeaTools and do a test of some sort, or would that be worthless? Right now my main priorty is making sure I have a working XP with the same abilities as it had when I got it. Like having the hidden partition, etc. I do have a empty 300GB HD that I could potentionaly take out of it's external case and put it inside for a install/partition something. But that would have to wait till tomorow (and I have to go to church, so it'll be like 2:00 be
