  1. Some batch files require administrator's rights to perform their tasks, such as writing to the HKLM and HKCR hives, performing disk maintenance, etc. It's easy to forget which do and which don't, leading to some annoying false starts.   2. CD/DVD drivers are included in every Windows installation, so there's no good reason to make them available for download. In addition, because Microsoft owns the files, they're apt to threaten legal action if PC Pitstop were to host them.

  4. Separate and apart from the problem itself, I cannot conceive of any reason to rely on the almost abysmally poor protection of Windows Defender. Almost every free solution is better, and a few nearly equal the best commercial offerings.
  5. Enter about:config in the address bar, and click the button to continue. Type ipc.pl in the search box. Double-click dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to toggle the setting. Close Firefox and monitor the Task Manager to determine that Firefox closes, then reopen the program. "plugin-container.exe" should no longer run when a plug-in loads. I've had more trouble with plugin-container.exe than with all the plug-ins combined.
  6. Extract the chipset drivers, then browse for the SMBus INF and CAT files. If they are present, perform a manual driver update, pointing the wizard to the appropriate folder. SetupChipset.exe -extract C:\Chipset
  7. As far as I can tell, an SM Bus INF file should be included in the Intel Management Engine Interface installation.   8. There appear to be three unrelated files involved in the errors. Shwicon is associated with the Allnet USB 6-in-1 card reader. STService.exe is part of Dell DataSafe Local Backup. The Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT.exe) is described here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926079 I'd guess that reinstalling or updating the card reader driver would fix that, and the same may be true for DataSafe.
  9. Must be misinterpreting something there. BitDefender's false-positive rate is 10, but the highest is 82 (McAfee). The average rate is 13.4.
  10. I suspect the delay is due to Windows attemping to detect the missing drive. Try this - connect both drives and boot to Windows, open the device manager and remove the Hitachi, then shutdown and disconnect it. If the hypothesis is correct, the subsequent boot should not exhibit the delay.
  11. What is the exact, complete error message? Possibly a Registry setting is causing this behavior. Run Regedit.exe (if you can, considering the restriction), and navigate to this registry key - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer In the right pane, look for RestrictRun 0x00000001 (1). Double-click it if it exists, then type 0 (the numeral "zero") and press Enter. The change does not take effect until Windows is restarted.
  12. badbinary, sarcasm does not make you correct or improve the quality of the discussion. Regarding the FAQ you cited ("Can I mix Ultra ATA devices with other devices..."), there is a discrepancy between it and Intel's documentation of the ICH4 used by the board in question. The whitepaper for this component states in the IDE description, "Independent timing of up to 4 drives...". The ICH4 datasheet agrees with "The fast IDE interface supports up to four ... IDE hard disks and ATAPI devices. Each IDE device can have independent timings." Curiously, the "Can I mix Ultra ATA devices..." FAQ for the D845GLLY and D845GLVA, which also use the ICH4, states, "Yes, the chipset is capable of supporting independent IDE device timings", and goes on to say that, while some native drivers may not support the feature, Intel's IDE drivers do (I know from experience that Windows 98 drivers do also). The conflicts in Intel's documents suggest that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. On the other hand (that's three hands, but who's counting), perhaps an error in the D845PEBT2's design has crippled the IDE controller's functionality to some degree so that individual transfer rates don't work with that board.
  13. Of course it's slower, and cabling has nothing to do with it. The transfer rate is limited by the CD drive's throughput. Obviously, the CD data cannot be written to the hard disk faster than the CD drive can read it, and even the fastest drives accessing data stored on the outer edge of a CD can only manage about 8 MB/sec (about 3 MB/sec for inner tracks). This pertains whether or not the hard disk and CD drive share a cable. This is just a quick reply to advise you of a rudimentary test I performed this morning, using the oldest computer at hand, which has a 440LX chipset and PIIX4 southbridge. IDE assignments are as follows. Primary Master - none Primary Slave - hard disk Secondary Master - DVD Secondary Slave - hard disk I used my XP Pro CD as the data source, and copied the largest 14 files (totalling 126 MB) to each hard disk, restarting between copies to ensure the disk cache was cleared. Copy times were nearly identical (± 2.5 seconds). OSes were Windows 98 and Windows XP (XP was installed just for the test). If even an ancient chipset did not exhibit the performance issues that you warn of, then it seems very unlikely that modern chipsets would do worse. Several members of the ExtremeTech forum did similar tests with a variety of southbridges, and the consensus was that these issues are mythical. The only exception I recall reported was with an early VIA 596B southbridge, but that was due to known bugs in the IDE interface which VIA addressed, both with a filter driver and BIOS updates suggested to the motherboard makers (unfortunately neither solution was wholly satisfactory).
  14. Open My Computer. Are both drives listed? Insert a CD into one drive and click the drive letter, then repeat the test with the other drive. Do you see the files and folders listed on both drives, or just one?
  15. That is actually not the case. In 1996, Intel introduced the PIIX3 southbridge which supports independent transfer rates for each ATA/ATAPI device. The other chipset manufacturers followed suit, and integrated the feature into all subsequent chipsets. This is trivially easy to confirm, by the way. Use a disk benchmarking tool like HDTach to determine perfomance when the hard disk is the only device on the channel, then repeat the test with a CD drive sharing the channel. Throughput will be identical. You should of course verify in the Device Manager that UDMA transfers are enabled for the hard disk's channel - if not, the results will not be very meaningful.
