  1. To my knowledge, which is admittedly limited, Macafee is not running a firewall. I am pretty sure they use the term center because it monitors other programs in you security system for updates etc. I have wondered myself why there are so many Macafe related programs running. When you say clear out junk files do you mean cookies and temp files etc.? I have defragged the hard drive. Can you tell me how to set defrag to run automatically? I tried the task scheduler but in the wizard I couldn't find defrag? Thanks for all the help.
  2. I use Macafee for virus scannning only. I think, and I am using zonealarm as the firewall. The computer was purchased with Macafee and Norton Internet Security preinstalled. I had many problems with Norton. After no help from Norton support and some research through forums etc. I uninstalled Norton and added ZoneAlarm. While surfing I stumbled on the PCPITSTOP site and tested the computer. I am pretty sure that Macafee is virus scanning only. I do not see any noticeable drop in performance when the cpu usage is high it just bugs me. Also do you have any suggestions about improving my uncached speed performance? Thanks for the help.
  3. Here is a link to one of the "low" tests. It was performed after the machine was running for a while. http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=F0SWNWJVSTCSTZPU Here is a test result after reboot: http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=3K9GNWJVSTCS98PU I have installed winpatrol but I do not see anythng unusual. Thanks for the help.
  4. I have noticed that if the computer is left running for several hours the cpu usage as reported in task manager rises to around 50%. Reboot will drop the usage to 0-2%. When the system is running at 50% I do not see any processes using up the cpu. That is all zeros in the column right of the process list. Is this an indication of background programs? Can a program be running and not reported in task manager? Thanks
  5. Thanks for the kick in the butt. I'll take a look.
  6. Yes I removed the contoller and rebooted etc. Thanks for the reply. The computer is only a few months old. I don't want o be kicking around inside just yet. Thanks for the reply.
  7. Checked out the ati website but I was unsure wich driver ot download. Please advise. I checked the DMA satus per the link and DMA if available was selected. Toggled it as directed. After shutting down Macafee I ran a new test slowdrive performance gone. Thanks for the help. http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=0N7WNWJVSTCS4T0U I took a closer look at the summary and although it wasn't flagged the drive performance is still a little low, 33.
  8. Unsure what he background stuff is, please advise. The longer the machine is running the higher the cpu usage is. Restart drops it to 0%. Is this expected? Do you have any suggestions concerning the unusually low drive performance shown in the pitstop test result. Thanks
  9. I found the pcpitstop test site yesterday and I have become obsessed with getting the best score possible. I have tested several times and the results change. The problem seems to be cpu usage. When the test results are low the cpu usage is high 40-50%. I checked running processes via task manager and do not see anything unusual. Usually, not always, a system restart drops cpu usage dramatically and the test improves considerably. The only constant seems to be I always receive the unusually low drive c: disk performance. I have tried all suggestions in the tip screen to correct this, no help. Below is a link to a good score. Thanks http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=0N7WNWJVSTCSJR0U

  11. While working with msconfig disabling programs from automatically starting I noticed a program that is listed as .exe selected to on start up. I am not very computer savvy but this seems strange to me. There is nothing in front of the dot it is listed as .exe only?
  12. I have tried all suggestions concerning the unusually slow drive, no help. Below is the link to my results. Please help http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=F0SWNWJVSTCS6XNU
