  1. don't see why not.

way i look at it is they are both front end media players, used to play all your media easily.

both play anything on your pc, both can be setup to stream content from the net, both can be setup to record things.

only real difference i can see is mythtv needs a dedicated backend to start with before it will work whilst kodi doesn't.

think of it like this ubuntu is the same as suse,

    both are linux os.

  2. ignore below, just noticed you said you'd installed the rpm and now you have no connection problems and it's just the speed seems bad, so will start a new post to see if we can find out why it's slow.

    ==========================================

i haven't replied because duan is/was helping you and it's just a rehash of the same topic here :- https://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?/topic/205283-update-kernel/?hl=rtl82192cu&do=findComment&comment=1800630

where you'd figured out how to fix the problem.

anyway i've had a look and made some changes to the instructions as was.

i put the correct rtl8192cu-fixes repo instead of rtl82192cu-fixes where you got stuck last time and also changed the version number from 8192cu/1.9 to 8192cu/1.10 which i believe is the latest and correct one.

so with luck these instructions will work, but if they don't just let us know where you failed and i'll see if i can figure out why for you.

After a long troubleshooting in the OpenSuse forums and lots of learning this is what's needed to make it work:

    -Add Pacman repos (Yast)
    -Install dkms (Yast)
    -Install Git (Yast)
    -Update Kernel (Yast)
-Install devel_basis (zypper install --type pattern devel_basis)

    git clone https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes.git

    sudo dkms add ./rtl8192cu-fixes

    sudo dkms install 8192cu/1.10

    sudo depmod -a

    sudo cp ./rtl8192cu-fixes/blacklist-native-rtl8192.conf /etc/modprobe.d/

    Reboot :)

try above and see how you get on.

  3. i'd give you one duan but they won't work for you in the states, we use a different digital signal to what you use over there.

we use dvb-t/dvb-t2 and you use atsc/qam i believe.

so my cards wouldn't be able to decode your television signals.

if you really want one look on ebay,

do some research first and make sure it will work on linux, you'll want an atsc/clear qam card :- https://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATSC_Devices

if you want a usb type then i believe this works fine :- http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Hauppauge+WinTV-HVR-950Q&_sacat=0

this is the usa equivalent tv card i put in my last build for my daughter:- http://www.ebay.com/itm/TBS6704-ATSC-Clear-QAM-Quad-Tuner-PCIe-Card-Windows-2000-XP-Vista-7-8-10-Linux-/331721016745?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

and i am currently using the older full height type in my setup. :- https://www.amazon.co.uk/DVB-T2-Tuner-Definition-Digital-Receiver/dp/B006MTN32A

    here's tbs site for drivers :- http://www.tbsdtv.com/products/tbs6704-atsc-or-clear-qam-quad-tuner-pcie-card.html

must admit i've spent a few hours testing kodi today and can't say i'm that impressed with it, nothing really wrong with it but mythtv seems so much more intuitive to navigate and use to me even though they are very very similar.

probably just me being biased and more used to using mythtv.

the content available on kodi via the addons is very impressive though, can't say ive used mythtv to stream anything off the net except for a short test a few years back so no idea how easy or hard it would be to get the same content on mythtv but might look into it again one day.

    :b33r:

  4. everything on skygo and netflix can be had like you say through the addons anyway but because it's for my parents i really want to try and make sure they aren't breaking any copy write laws which some of the addons probably are with the content they play, but it seems like i'm in a catch 22 position from what i've been able to glean so far from google, sky go and netflix seem to be the 2 hardest addons to find that reliable work, yet other addons work perfectly and can play the content of those 2 channels perfectly but probably illegally.

    :b33r:

  5. i wouldn't use the builds, so understand what i'm going to do, and it's just a case of deciding on which are the best repo's to use and what addons to install.

from the comments beneath the tvaddons video it looks like they're upsetting the people who use their repo so might give it a miss unless i find i really need it for something.

you have any recommended skins and addons you think i should try george?

so far looks like i'll only install

    addon installer

    exodus

    velocity

    Netlflixbmc

can't find a skygo addon at the moment.

    :b33r:

to be honest all kodi really needs to do is play their dvd collection, sky go and netflix reliably every thing else like exodus and velocity i might skip.

  6. yes seen that before duan, but as i understand it you need a running myth backend first before the app is any use, and if i was going to do that anyway i'd probably setup a myth front end and use that instead of kodi on their pc.

    :b33r:

think i'll follow this setup guide when i do setup kodi :-

  7. cost wasn't a concern really just didn't see the point in buying something that didn't offer any more content than what he could get anyway with his pc and why i thought any streaming stick was a waste of money for him.

in fact just spent about 3 or 4 times as much as the cost of a firestick on a universal remote (they've wanted one for a while.) and flirc so when i go round i can set things up so he can just use the 1 remote instead of the 4 he now uses and also control kodi without the need to get up and go anywhere near the pc..

still looking into what apps i'm going to install on kodi.

things they'll definitely want to use kodi for is netflix and skygo don't think they stream anything from amazon and just use it for books.

and of course all their dvd collection i've already put on their pc.

    :b33r:

  8. yes that's what i thought, my dad wanted to buy one for my mum but i told him he's just wasting his money seeing how they only have 1 tv already connected to a pc so they can stream things.

i really should put a front end on it though to make things easier for them to use.

kodi looks favourite seeing how they don't need a backend for any tv tuners so no point setting up a mythtv system like i use.

    :b33r:

  9. off topic but seeing how 2 of you have a firestick i was wondering what advantages if any does a firestick offer you over streaming from a pc?

more interested in content than anything hardware like remote or lower power.

    :b33r:

  10. just for info and no help to the topic in general.

I did just download a couple of opensuse iso's via direct download and even as torrent. They downloaded super fast and I seen in uTorrent a down speed of 1.5 MB/s which showed in task manager as 14.8 Mbps

So why is it that I can download a 4GB OS iso file in less than 3 minutes, but then trying to load webpages takes forever and seems like waiting on a dial up connection?

no idea why the difference between the torrent and task manager but 1.5MB is equal to 12Mb. not 14.8Mb task manager shows. after all there is 8 (b)its to 1 (B)yte.

and there's no way on earth you can download a 4.7GB iso in 3 minutes at 1.5MBs.
    4.7GB is about 4812MB,

so 4812 divided by 1.5 equals about 3,208 seconds which equals about 53 and a half minutes.
not the 3 minutes you say it took you.

to download it in 3 minutes you'd need a download speed of about 27MBs or 216Mbs.

    :b33r:

not really sure what xfinity has to do with anything here duan, from my understanding that is a mobile phone app that allows the phone to use xfinity wifi hotspots when it can't connect to the mobile network.

and all an xfinity router will do is allow anyone to use your routers wifi that has the xfinity app installed.

  11. still not sure why you think you need to replace libmicrohttpd.so12 with libmicrohttpd.so10 because you don't.

libmicrohttpd.so10 is not even in my repo's, so if you have it installed i'd delete it and accept any changes it offers.

i assume dvd was your install media so i'd delete that from the repo's,

no idea what the openSUSE-20160613-0 repo is but i'd delete that too.

    (or at least disable both.)

do a zypper dup (just for reference usually you never do a "dup" and always just an "up") now those repo's are gone

then install kodi from packman and see if it works if not now try switching packages to packman repo (you can always switch them back to oss repo later if needed.), i never had any conflicts but no idea what packages your using from google-chrome repo, (don't use chrome so that might break.) usually i just accept option 1 for all conflict resolutions and things work just fine, there's only been a few odd instances i remember where i needed to choose a different option in the past.

    my repo's.

  12. don't know exactly what i did but fixed firefox and kodi still works.

i doubt you'll have any problems nigel, was a graphics/video playback issue in my opinion and can't see that effecting kdenlive, no idea what lollipop is though.

    :b33r:

  13. no idea why but now i have kodi working (which i probably will never use.) i've broken firefox (which i always use.) the side scroll bar is missing, so makes scrolling down the page a hassle because i have to use the scroll wheel for any control.

    :b33r:

  14. ok got it working just go into yast and switch all packages to packman repo and then it started just fine, probably had some conflict with a package or 2 installed from the suse oss repo.

    :b33r:

  15. i got rid of the

by install libsec3 in yast but it still crashes and i can't figure out why.

will look at it again later.

    :b33r:

  16. where you getting kodi from? kodi is in my packman repo and installed without any problems.

just tried to run it though and it pops up the start screen for a second and then crashes.

will try and find out why.

    :b33r:

  17.

that second pic confused me but assume it's upside down, is that the psu over the top of where i'd expect to see a big cpu heatsink? if so what clearance does it leave for the cpu heatsink? take it, it must need a low profile cpu heatsink or a watercooled unit that you've got.

looks like a skylake itx build to me, so what are the specs of everything installed including that case? don't think i've seen one like it before.

    :b33r:

  18. don't think you want to use vlc backend duan, far as i'm aware they stopped supporting it, so whatever the problem is i'd stick with using gstreamer backend.

what os are you using? and what if any error message do you get? start amarock in terminal to see it's output that should offer a clue on what the problem is.

    :b33r:

have you installed all needed codecs?

try a zypper up and then see if it works after adding the packman repo if you don't already have it, assume your running a version of suse.
