  1. Pros and cons? Which is better. Thanks
  2. Thanks again for your suggestions. I will follow the one about saving data and post to user to user. I think somewhere along the way I must have given you the idea that my interest in computers goes beyond word processing and internet research. That was very wrong of me and I apologize. Not only am I technically and mechanically challenged in all areas by virtue of genetic misprogramming I am also a part of the generation that finds remote controls baffling. There are areas in which I excell and those in which I manage to get by. Computers are a "get by" area. Any energy I used to
  3. Juliet, I read your thoughts re me wiping hard drive and doing reinstallation. I then found several sites that gave me a pretty detailed idea of the process involved. I just laughed and laughed and laughed. This was a good joke on me. You are so funny. You really had me going. I thought for a moment you were serious. You will be proud to know though that I am going to see if I can figure out how to back up necessities before having clean install done. That is, if I can overcome my fear. Any suggestions regarding this effort would be appreciated. By the by, I am going to
  4. Juliet, I'm not sure what I did - or if I did - but I didn't do it on purpose. Openoffice forum told me to check task mgr where I was likely to find multiple applications of soffice.exe and soffice.bin. I found about 20 and ended them all and was able to open Open office. I don't know what those are or why they screwed me up but there you have it. I clicked on website regarding DDE and confused myself so much that I took no action. As an aside - when you last left me a few days ago my processes had been whittled down to 33. They are now up to 42 Another aside - I t
  5. A message flashed across screen saying that Due to Error Open Office had crashed and all docs were lost. However, all files below will be recovered. There were no files listed below and when I tried to open Open Office it would not open. I then decided to reboot hoping that would work. When I tried all protection programs AVG, etc closed and then a message came on saying End Program DDE Window Server Nothing happened and I tried to reboot again but got same message and computer will not shut down
  6. Great! Thanks once again for your help, Juliet. I can't imagine what I would have done without it. Should you ever need any help just do a post. In the past I have been known to give advice on practically any subject, whether I knew anything about it or not, but now I make it a strict rule not to do it unless asked. It has taken me a lifetime to conclude that it tends to put people off.
  7. Computer is buzzing right along. Two things: New Zone Alarm will not allow me to access bellsouth web email. I can send and receive mail from outlook but cannot get to it from bellsouth home page. I figured this out by a process of elimination. Have tried to find settings that would make the difference but cannot. Any ideas? Before your help I had, if I recall correctly, more than 40 processes running. I now have 33. That would seem to me to be a good thing and contribute to speed of operation. Is that correct and did you, as part of what you recommended, remove unnecessary p
  8. Computer is decidedly faster. So once again you have loaded me down with things to do. I'm beginning to have the impression that there is no stopping point with you but I'll get right on it. Juliet, I cannot tell you how pleased I am with all the help you have given me. More than that I have learned a great deal. "Learned" is a lot too strong. Let's say that you have exposed me to things that were beyond my awareness and I hope to learn from them. One of the things that I especially appreciated is that your instructions were always so clear. It has been my experience that t
  9. Wademan, I write short articles (some on boating mishaps) like the one listed below and am presently working on a novel which, prior to this little problem, was going quite well - from my point of view anyway. Thanks for back suggestions. I will back up six ways to Sunday in the future. http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:EkqTq...;cd=2&gl=us
  10. Juliet, Computer seems to be running fine although once again I have not used it enough to determine how it is impacted by changes. It is faster though. Will leave another comment when I can tell more. SuperAntiSpyware is now active at startup. Will this work with AVG and others? Below is SuperAntiSpywareLog followed by HJT: SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log Generated 03/30/2007 at 01:10 PM Application Version : 3.6.1000 Core Rules Database Version : 3209 Trace Rules Database Version: 1219 Scan type : Complete Scan Total Scan Time : 01:40:03 Memory items s
  11. Do I have this right? Are you telling me that you identified and removed infection that caused loss of docs? If so, what was it and what else do you know about it? I got rid of Etrust in favor of AVG. Should AVG virus and anti spyware both be running at the same time? I have had these ( WinPatrol Windows Defender STOPzilla! AVG7 ZoneLabs installed for some time and they appear to be running well together - tho I'm not that I could tell if they were not. Any recommendations? I will follow your directions and post again. Thanks.
  12. Wademan, Some of the docs were quite important. I am a writer and several docs represented works in progress. Fortunately I had saved to disk the most important up to two days before virus hit. Unfortunately I had not saved work progress the two days before virus hit and those two days represented a good bit of important work. Fortunately, I have learned a great lesson concerning backup and would rather have learned it now than two hundred pages down the road. Fortunately too I do remember my starting place and the direction I was going in. I also remember the words I used - jus
  13. The only thing that I failed to accomplish was part of directions regarding cleaning out temp files. See below: Click on Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. (There was no such button.) After clicking on Customize Desktop button then click on web tab. Under web pages (There was no web pages and no security info or anything similar.) Can you summarize what was accomplished with these procedures - in English if you don't mind. You are very generous with your knowledge, time, effort, and I am very grateful that you took an interest. New HJT log below:
  14. Juliet, Below is Smitfraud. AVG did not turn up any infections. New HJT log will follow in next post. I would like to know what Stopzilla inserts are. I have not gone to these places. Computer seems to be running more smoothly though I haven't used it enough to really tell. 15. Wademan, I clicked on info you provided regarding restore points. There is some possibility that I understood correctly some of what I read but it is doubtful. I checked system restore and I have it set to max which says 12% and about 1200MB. My problem with virus that destroyed docs began at 4:35AM on 3//22/07. System restore indicates (if I have it right, that I could restore to 3/21/07. Question is: Does system restore impact mydocs? If I went back to the day before virus would docs be alright at that point? Better queston I guess is: What impact does system re
  16. Wademan, I right away ran HJT as recommended and posted in appropriate place. Waiting for results. I had already scanned with Panda and found very minor issues. I did click appropriate button on Kaspersky and tried numerous times with no luck. I had also tried Bit defender but Stopzilla pops up to inform me of spyware alert Brilliant Digital and would not install. If you recommend I can turn stopzilla off and try again. Appreciate all your help.
  17. Juliet, I clicked on Kaspersky Online Scanner but did not get prompt to install Active X. Instead it took me to page below. I have IE6 so that shouldn't be the problem. The only thing I could have opened was Kaspersky File Scanner which will only allow me to scan individual files. What am I doing wrong? http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d...kavwebscan.html

  19. I appreciate all the responses and will follow advice and post results. Thanks very much.
  20. First: I am so surprised that absolutely no one has replied to my post. No one has any opinion or suggestion - or did I offend you folks? Update: In first post I said, (It is too late for past docs now but it will continue to eat any new ones I create. If I can't identify and get rid of virus pretty quickly I will have to seek another option.) Virus actually did its damage (modified docs) between 4:35AM 3/22/07 and about 7AM and then disappeared, perhaps self destructed. I could find no evidence of it except for modification time and damage. I thought I was well protected so d
  21. Thanks for info and advice. I tried to run bitdefender but it wouldn't work. I did run Panda but it did not find anything of significance. I use avg (virus and spyware), zone alarm, windows defender and run others regularly. After having several emails returned from one contact with Att00007.dat (who uses hotmail) suddenly they have stopped.
  22. A returned email contained the attachment: ATT00007.dat Could anyone tell me what this is. I've recently had a virus and am very suspicous of anything I don't understand. Which, I am finding, is making me suspicious of just about everything. Thanks
  23. Here's a doozy for you guys. At 4:35 am 3/22/07 a virus started destroying mydocs. I discovered that it was a virus causing the problem when I found that all my garbled docs had been modified at this time. After learning that docs were being eaten up I saved what I could to disk. By the next day all docs (apparently, I haven't checked them all) had been destroyed. An IT friend tried to help me. He said that he would have thought that with all the protection I had (AVG anivirus, AVG spyware, adaware SE, spybot, zone alarm, windows defender, etc) it would be difficult for something
  24. mme, thanks for response. You went to a great deal of trouble to explain and I'm grateful.
  25. Hulk, thanks for your response. I downloaded cleaner and it quickly removed weather bug. However, there was a large list of items - some of which I recognized and removed -most of which I know nothing about and am afraid to touch.
