  6. thanx Henry but i still need some help. in the link you posted, it mentions 3 things i need some help with : 1 - it says at bottom of step 11 : SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T3 is that a zero or the letter O when it says A22... and when it says P33... i am just not sure if it is a number or letter. 2 - also, i cant seem to find Windows Explorer. any advice in helping me locate it is appreciated 3 - steps 16 and 17 tell me to : Locate the Autoexec.nt file, right-click the Autoexec.nt file, and then click Copy. Right-click the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste. the Autoexec.nt folder i made is located on my desktop. do i copy and paste the entire notepad file over the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 file? OR do i open the Autoexec.nt folder first, then copy / paste the contents of the file, into the contents of the opened %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder? thanx for any help! a true noob --- Derek.

  9. i found Windupdates installed on my pc (looked in C: / Windows / Downloaded Program Files). this was JUST after i ran a fully updated Spybot S&D and a fully updated Ad-Aware SE. is that normal for those 2 programs to miss something like that?? thanx for any enlightenment --- Derek.
  10. it's an HP. it finally stayed working long enough to d/l and install 12 critical updates...maybe this will work, i will keep yall posted. thanx --- Derek.
  11. no i havent installed anything new lately. last thing was a 2nd printer a few months back....still havent even used this pc. i recently defragged...dunno if that coulda triggered something...i also ran spybot to no avail. i will check windows updates again, tried last nite and it froze during downloading. i am not pc savvy enough to install my own HD ......i dont trust meself. i also dont have the Windows XP CD. when i bought the pc a few years back, XP was brand spankin new and they didnt give me a disc, they partitioned it on my HD local pc shop says i can trade this in for a couple hundred and buy a new one after trade-in for $300'ish....i may go that route if i HAVE to. thanx Hawk! i wish i understood all that BIOS and Boot Sector stuff, but i dont lol. i dont have the time to learn either, i use the pc here for mostly my home business so i need to get it back up and running pretty quick. thanx for the replies fellas!! i'll check back for any other advice. take care --- Derek.
  12. Kernel_Stack_Inpage_Error that's the message i have gotten twice after my pc has froze up. it has froze up dozens of times lately. other times i get a window that pops up with an exclamation point, saying something about Hardware. any ideas on how i can fix this problem short of taking it in for service? i know it sounds like the harddrive is going, i'm just hopeful it is something simpler. thanx for any feedback --- Derek. BTW, when it freezes, the computer starts making clicking noises ... 3 different sounding clicks that make a pattern and stay that way.
