  1. awwww I send you my sympathys! I am sorry for your loss! You wife just didn't understand? WOMEN! hehehe Hey wait, I am one.... Wifes, can't live with em, can't shoot em! hehehe
  2. It always used to be "coke" for me, but I found that in more recent years I call it "pop" now that I am here in Sweden...ppl look at me strange. I now have to re-train myself to say läsk prounounced lesk
  3. Thanks dough. I am not at her house now. I don't think I will be back to her house again until next week. I am running out of time to get this thing figured out. I leave to move to Sweden here in 12 days! Altho I will be leaving town a few days before that. I might have to have her take it back to Best Buy where she bought it, and have them reformat or something. I just worry that she won't get all of the good things back on there if they do. Such as Adaware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, AVG, after uninstalling Norton. etc. I was hoping to figure this out first. She is an elderly lady...so I know she probably won't be able to explain herself when she takes it back to them. It is very sad that she has sooo many problems with a new computer. But of course it is past the date for her to return it.
  4. http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=RWMJNWVAGHCSX19U Nothing really new in this test. Still showing alot of things running that I need to uninstall that i can't seem to do, because of this problem. grrrrrrr And yes I know I need to run defrag. I just deleted some things and uninstalled Norton and all that. I will defrag, but not until I get more of these things uninstalled and removed.
  5. I know that the Quicken that I was uninstalling may have been one that was partially uninstalled. It locked up twice and we had to manually reboot. But that was the first one that I tried to uninstall. I saw the rest listed and they were next on my list to go. More specifically MsMoney was listed and was the next one that I intended on uninstalling. BUT then when I rebooted and went back to the add/removed programs list, neither of them were listed as well as many others that I knew were there before, but no longer are there. There are many programs that are listed there such as this MS Dancer that I wanted to uninstall. But when I highlight the one listed, it does not give me a prompt to remove or even change. I have never come across anything like this before. I did just run spybot and adaware after updating. Each program did find one problem each, which I have removed. A couple of weeks ago, I had my friend who is a hijack this tech take a look at the logs that I ran on this pc, and everything looked fine. No problems that he could find. So I don't know what is going on with this thing. I will run a test on this again...and see if it will shed any light on this problem. This lady has an HP, and they put sooo many things on this pc. It is unreal how much crap they have downloaded on this. But I can't get rid of them since I can't seem to get the add/remove software list to show up all the things. Oh and I have checked on many of the products to see if they had an "uninstall". Some did but others did not. Oh and it does look like there are some wild tangent programs on here. There were some things that didn't seem to be games, but other things. Like some type of Gem master type thing, and a otto thing as well. But they had uninstalls so I ran those.
  6. Argghhhhh! lol This student of mine's pc is driving me CRAZY!!! lol (pianoteachers) This stupid HP has a TON of things on it. Way more things then she wants or needs. Such as two money programs....quicken AND msMoney. lol Anyway, I was uninstalling in Safemode. When I was in both safemode and regular mode, there were a TON of things listed. I had tried to uninstall the Quicken Installer in both safemode and regular mode. Both times the stupid pc froze on me. Then when I have gone back into Add/Remove programs in both safemode and regular mode, it is missing the quicken installer and the msmoney installer and a ton more things that were listed that I was planning to uninstall. I never did uninstall them, but now they are not listed so that I can. BUT they are still in the system, because if I click Start/Programs/ they are still all listed in there, for me to click to install. Also some of the things that are now missing in my add/remove program list is a ton of games that she will not use or play. such as polar golf, and other games that are all part of the "wild games" program. I was planning to uninstall those as well, but they are missing from the list. grrrrrrrr What happened? Why did alot of those programs just disappear from the list? another problem that I have noticed is that on the ones that ARE listed in the "add/remove programs" list, when highlighted they are no longer showing the Change/Remove button anymore. It just shows the status if the program is used or rarely used, etc. I don't know what the problem is or what I could have done to cause this problem. Therefore I can't seem to uninstall many programs that I need to and want to. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  7. I have heard of several ppl who have family in houston or who are from that area, and they were in that gridlock of traffic for hours, but turned back to go home to wait out the storm. One person only got 20 miles in 9 hours! They turned back. Figured it would be better to be in a house, then in a car when it hits.
  8. I used to work at a gas station too! And I know just what you mean! They can only drive one of their cars anyway! sheez...let others have some gas too. OR the ones who bring a pick up load of gas cans...and fill all of those up as well! Anyone here from or around Houston area?
  9. That is just NUTS! Why do they turn the gas off or stop delivering. Sure I know the trucks probably can't get thru, but sheez....how are ppl supposed to evacuate and get out if they don't have gas in their cars??? It stuff like that, that causes such tragedy! Just like in New Orleans...ppl couldn't get out.....not everyone had cars....not everyone had enough gas in their cars....they didn't have any stores open to get supplies. This just burns me up....altho, I don't know of a solution, but it still burns me.
  10. I just talked to a friend of mine who lives in TX. She said they are expecting 20 ft waves in Galveston. They worry that the levy's there won't hold if it does. She said that San Antonio who already has alot of refugees from Katrina, are gearing up to expect more from Rita.
  11. From what I can recall it is automatic. Most free programs have some type of upgrade to their paid products. I know that on some ( I can't recall which ones ) will prompt you to upgrade to their paid product, when you try to set up the auto-check for upgrades. Which is only offered to those who have the paid products. Why do you want the paid product instead of the free one, anyway?
  12. Yeah I understood that it is disabled. hehehe I was just asking what it IS? NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Controller Sorry for the confusion.
  13. You still need to make sure you have spyware protection, if you haven't already. As they suggested above. Download for Ad-aware SE here - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ Download for Spybot S&D here - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ I am glad you were able to solve your problem! Also as mentioned above by others it is always a smart bet to run web-based virus scans in addition to your own virus control. And always keep up on the updating of all those things. You may want to consider spywareblaster to help prevent the spyware from getting to your pc in the first place.
  14. It's not a matter, that I "prefer" to have all those running in the background. But rather, I am struggling with disabling some, and also finding some of them listed in castlecops. Such as..... It seems that I still need to get rid of things such as Realtek Audio Debugger SunJava Update ATI Hotkey Utility Office XP Speech (clfmon) (this was one that I tried to get rid of in msconfig, I followed the directions at Castlecops to get rid of it, but apparently it didn't work) Photosmart and Card Reader HPBootOP, one of those I mentioned above that I couldn't find info on at CastleCops ehRecvv.exe Lightscript adjust (this one is in c:\hp\bin\cloaker.exe...) also couldn't find listed at castlecops Also.........in the startup toolbar.....(next to the clock) I have one thing that I am unsure what it is or how to get rid of it. It says... Safely Remove Hardware the only item that shows up on this is USB Mass Storage Device Any ideas?
  15. I have a friend (she lives far from me) who is having some problems she can't seem to figure out. When she connects to the internet, after the handshake and her isp is connected, the computer will temporarily freeze up, while it is processing. She notices her status bar freezing up, but after awhile, it will finally catch up and it will continue, and anything she has clicked in the meantime will finally all pop up, at the same time. I asked her to run a full test....and here are her results. http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Summary...HDWNWFU3TCS8MNU She is going to defrag, and make the adjustments to Internet Settings and Cache size, as suggested. In the Windows details, it shows the following tip, to check disabled devices. It shows the following.... According to Windows, the devices and/or drivers listed below are not enabled: NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Controller [problem code 22] A disabled device does not always indicate an error, but is a good place to start if you are having problems with a device. I personally haven't come across that one, can anyone shed any light on what that is? It does look like she has alot of things running in the background and Norton is using alot of resources. I am thinking that her problem of that temporary freeze is probably due to all those things running in the background and it is taking awhile to process. She's had this problem for awhile now, and it still was an issue even after she defragged. So it doesn't seem like that is the cause. I was quite impressed with her, that she does regularly go to Housecall to run that web-based virus scan, and she uses Mozilla! I noticed there is a Wild Tangent on her system, I know that has been a nightmare for many. Could that be some of the problem? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  16. I ran a new test. Looks a lil better. During the test I got that white screen again. Had to manually shut it down and start over again. Here is the newest results. http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=RWMJNWVAGHCSXTTU
  17. Already done that...here is the link to my post. I think the link to the results should still be good. I can't remember if it only lasts for a week? http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=98891 Here is a direct link to the results. http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Summary...USQNWVAGHCSDFHU Thanks!
  18. I am helping a friend with her brand new computer. It is an HP package. Running XP as her OS. We will get a white screen covering the entire screen from time to time, that will completely freeze up her computer. No error. Can't Ctrl Alt Del to get out of it or to restart the computer. Have to manually turn off the pc at the tower and restart it that way. There doesn't seem to be anything in common with what we are doing, to try and figure out what is causing it. (meaning that we are doing total different things from the last time it did it) Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!
  19. I am glad you were able to get here! Great to see you here too! And I am glad you found your answer! See I told you, these guys are GREAT and very quick! hehehe Thanks hftmrock!
  20. I figured that some probably would have seen this before, but it was still worth the laugh! hehehe I worked with a lady who worked at an ISP company. And she sometimes took the service tech, help desk, type calls. One time she had a lady who called saying she can't get on the internet! She had an account with them, and she had all the correct info, with the correct phone number and everything. She even explained the "handshake" sound when connecting to the isp server. After alot of time, trying to explain things to the customer, and finding that the lady didn't understand half of what she was talking about, such as the "start" button...my friend asked the ridiculas question... "maa'm, do you have a computer??" The lady replied No....I am just trying to get online from my TELEPHONE! ROFL...can you believe it? I wonder what she expected to get from her phone? I guess she thought that the information from the world wide web would just be audio, and she could listen to the info! LOL True Story!
  21. Wow! I feel like a total IDIOT! ROFL! I was seeing the "anti" in that "MS AntiSpyware utility" and just assumed that it was "anti"-virus. LOL I didn't even catch the "spyware" part of it! ROFL That's what I get for not wearing my glasses! I won't mention that I am blonde..hehehe. I am "blaming" it on my glasses! Or there-lack of! hehehe
  22. Cool! Thanks! I wasn't aware of that. I personally don't have XP as of yet, so I am unfamiliar with that program. So if it is not anti-virus, then what is it exactly?
  23. Thanks dough! I appreciate it! As for the MS AntiSpyware utility. She has Norton on this system. So if I understand it correctly, we do not want to have more then one anti-virus on this system, correct? I just did a Full Test and posted the results in the Test Results forum. But here is the link to check out the results, if that might help with seeing what she has on this pc. http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=WUSQNWVAGHCSDFHU
  24. I am helping someone here who has just gotten this computer. It has this Webroot Spy Sweeper constantly popping up all over the place. It says it is expired, and of course wants us to renew, altho she has never really subscribed or bought this in the first place from what I can tell. It seems to protect the computer from unauthorized system changes. It looks like it is probably something I want to remove. Since it constantly pops up during any time while we are on line. Any advice as to whether or not we should keep this, get rid of it, or what? Thanks! Skittles
