  1. I had a nice working computer for 2 years and then *poof*, the BIOS was gone so I need to install one. The mobo is not populated so I just want to fllash it with the latest BIOS in case I need to use it. I read the instructions on doing the ASUS BIOS update and it says that I also need the Bupdater Utility V1.30 for flash BIOS under DOS If I understand the process, that Bupdater file has to be on the flash drive also. Using DOS because there are no HDs attached to the board so no OS. Something just occured to me. If the origional BIOS is gone the board might not be able to do an update. I had gotten sone help from the friendly Pit folks back in March (I think it was March) when this saga began. I think I ended up buying 2 boards and 2 CPUs and a new power supply. In fact you provided a couple of ideas for us to try. Topic heading was 'Dead computer. Where to start.' The last line you wrote: is where I am right now. Appreciate your help clarifying what the proper steps are. ASUS's site just added to my confusion. Thanks!
  2. M5A99 FX PRO 2.0. The file I downloaded shows up as a .CAP file. The support guy I talked to said I would have to rename it a .CAP file. When I click it I get a 'what program do you wamt to use to open this file' prompt. I'm a self-taught computer user and my teacher left a couple of big holes in my knowledge base. You are correct- the tech also said the flash drive had to be formatted as FAT. I thought he said there would be a BIOS update file that needed to be installed too.
  3. LOL We painted most of the signs for Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte 'back in the day'. Of course that was before I realized I probably didn't want to be the age I am now, climbing in and out of man lifts to letter on the back of shovels in the pit. I moved here in '77 so you beat me by a couple of years. It was still pretty crazy when I got here.
  4. I thought I coud use win zip but a little reading makes me think I was wrong. ASUS says to extract the file, rename it and save it to a flash drive. I thought I understood the necessary steps but I seem to be missing something. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  5. C_B, tonite I was looking for an answer about SS and read the thread about I_G's passing and then happened upon this one. Reads like you've had quite an adventure over the last couple of years! If you are spending time outside with a weedeater and mower you must be doing pretty good. Very glad to know it. God bless you!
  6. So sorry for our loss. He will be missed.
  7. I have been busy reading various and sundry topics this afternoon and my Super Shield icon is red w/a yellow bolt and the Protection Level says "Super Shield Protection" but running the mouse over said icon says "PC Matic Super Shield- Def Download Failed". I took a hasty look around in the Super Sheild area of the program but didn't see any place to attempt to do a new download. I would feel better if I had an unfailed download... Do I need to update my Active X?
  8. It has 4 8-gig sticks of Corsair Vengence. We did test them last nite and all seems well. The Asus mobo has 4 lites that are supposed to light up if there is a problem with either the CPU, RAM, video card(s) or HDs. While I'm not a big fan of idiot lights, the only one lit up is the one that indicates a problem with the CPU. Actually, as far as we can tell the mobo is still okay- it is the CPU that is history. It should be returnable- if I get my act together soon. I am really grateful for the help I've gotten. Appreciate it very much. If anyone thinks of any other potential cause, please give me a shout. Blessings on you!
  9. Bought the first mobo on 5Mar. The Corsair PS on 19Mar. 25Mar asked for and received a return/replacement on the mobo and bought the new CPU. I don't want to be unfair to Asus and ask for another replacement on the mobo if it is something we are doing (or not doing) to cause this. The machine had been stable for at least three years before this cluster mess began. I wonder if they are having some kind of problems in assembly since it is the second board to die in less than a month. I don't know if my machine can take the same RAM to be able to test it. Kinda limited on vehicles to use at this point. I do appreciate the suggestions and will let you know what happens. Thanks so much for your responses. You simply are the best!
  10. Update: Got the new CPU and after installing it went into Safe Mode and everything seemed fine. The computer had picked up the drive array just fine and everything in the device manager checked out. Monitored the temperature and it was fine. The computer ran super this time... for 3 hours. Then the CPU died again. The mobo has the same CPU lite on again so it isn't getting past the POST. Is there any virus going around that could do this or did we just get a bad CPU? As always any ideas will be appreciated.
  11. It is amazing how even something small can mess up the works. We bought our first Windows-based computer (we had a C-64 and then an Amiga before it) from Tiger Direct. It began having issues and they replaced the HD, then the mobo. Turned out to be a defective CD drive. Every program we installed prior to getting it replaced had errors. Thanks again for your help. I used the wrong bookmark for this site today- I clicked on my bookmark for the Pit instead and Chrome came up with a screen saying did I want to go to this unsafe website! That they would try to get my credit card numbers... You might want to pass that along to whoever is taking care of the PCPitstop site. You didn't need to wear a scarve this winter. LOL
  12. Terry1966- Altho that's a happy thought (about the parts working on the old motherboard) and we tried it. The only thing that happened was the cpu light came on. I think the psu had been failing for a long time and damaged the old motherboard. When we replaced it, the perky new mobo sucked the life out of the psu and it failing killed the cpu. (LOL That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.) I was going to order a replacement psu but I starting reading the comments from folks who had that brand and it sounds as tho they are not very reliable. CB- Thanks for the link. After I'd posted my question I decided to bite the bullet and just order another cpu. Since the cpu lite came on on both mobos, figured it had to be dead. Of course the real concern is the video cards. If they are dead you might hear the cries all the way to Kansas. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I appreciate your responses. This board has been my number 1 resource for quite a few years and I'm so glad to have a way to tap into the wealth of knowledge you possess! Thanks again.
  13. We have a computer that has AMD KM3 8350 8-core cpu Asus M5A99FX Pro w/ 4 8-gig blocks of Corsair Vengenance 2 Radeon R9 290x 4-gig video cards 4 Seagate 1-TB HDs in a raid array Windows 7 64 pro It had a Enermax 1350 pos PS It now has a Corsair HX1000i PS About 2 weeks ago it crashed. It had been unstable and we thought the bios had been corrupted. Bought another MB and got everything switched over. Turned it on and it ran fine for a week. He was playing Fallout 4 and *boom* it dropped like a rock. Checked and the PS wasn't working. Did some reasearch and bought a new PS. But after installing the new PS there is nothing that comes on but the cpu lite on the MB but no other ones. And the fans on the case and PS spin up. Is there any way of testing a cpu? Any ideas? We have decided that the PS must have been failing for a while and finally gave up the ghost. I'm afraid it took out the cpu and the video cards. Thanx in advance. Appreciate any ideas/suggestions you have.
  14. It seems to run just fine in Safe Mode. It was the only way to get online. When I posted my request I also spent some time reading about other folks' issues. I downloaded the Junk Removal Tool and AdwCleaner and have run them both. Both found several files. and reg entries that I had them delete. I will check out the info about msconfig. I had forgotten about it. I have another question. I have a 2+0 Stripe/Raid 0 array and the last time I went to the Pit it said I needed to defrag my HD. I have had this system up and running for 5 or 6 years and I don't think it has ever been defragged. How do I do that? Appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions! Thanking you very much.
  15. Sorry. I couldn't come up with a more creative headline and that's the problem I'm having. It has been almost a month ago that my formerly well-running computer began to lock up. I have been using PCMatic and so I ran it and it found a virus that the support folks at PCMatic explained as a badly downloaded file. Y kawika advised me to clear my browser cache, which I did. For a couple of days things were fine but now it is locking up again. It doesn't matter if it is online or not. I took it to the Pit to be scanned, have run PCMatic scans, took it to Trend's online scanner, ran Malware Bytes, HiJack This*, Spybot S&D... Nothing is found. If anyone has any other ideas I'd be happy to give them a try. Thanks for reading this. *Didn't realize HJT wasn't being used anymore. Too bad. It was pretty helpful.
  16. >>when you say that the downloads are being blocked.. what is blocking them? your anti virus software?<< One would think that some program would have taken credit for blocking, right? I don't know- may have been Windows Firewall but it started at the MS site where you have to download the Genuine Check.exe. >>(what kind are you using)<< The paid version of AVG. And I have AdAware (and Spybot) for spies. >>how do you know they are being blocked? a pop-up message?<< I was using Chrome and the download notifications show up at the bottom of the window. As soon as whatever I was downloading was finished, the little info window would no longer say the number of MBs being downloaded- it would give the file name and have blocked behind it, i.e. Genuine Check.exe (blocked) I never see any pop-ups. >>can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing ? it might make this a bit more clear.<< I can't post a screenshot since AVG seems to have handled the problem. I have a work-around if I need the old Help files so I no longer care if MS thinks I genuine or not AND I'm able to post here again. <LOL> >> also have you turned off the windows firewall, or other software firewall you may have installed.. also, have you tried disabling your antivirus software and then downloading the files?<< I turned off the firewall and enabled the scripting options MS said it had to have for the validation. And I disabled the antivirus. The fact that I couldn't post here is a far bigger concern. Appreciate your suggestions and thank you for taking the time to answer!
  17. Read your answer the day before yesterday and wanted to try the fix before I replied. I'm not all that familiar with Win 7 and spent some time right clicking and reading, "Open link in new tab, Open..." LOL But I finally found the proper download file and saw the option to unblock so I could run MalwareBytes (which didn't find any problems). While the MS validation download (Genuine Check.exe) is listed there, it says that 0 bytes were downloaded and so the unlock option isn't available. Was this site down last nite? I tried several times to come back and couldn't get past the PC PitStop page. (A very nice page it is, BTW) Even as I type this, all of the type options (there at the top of the box) are grayed out so I'm guessing my machine is still having an issue of some sort. I appreciate your help with this. While computer problems are a pain in the *** I always seem to learn something useful as I work thru them. Update- I was unable to read or post here the last couple of days as I mentioned (above). Ran AdAware and Spybot and nothing came up. I then ran AVG and it found a bunch of 'trackers' and the 0 byte MS download (Genuine Check.exe) which AVG said was corrupt. I can get to this site now and all of the posting options are visible again. *whew* I have several old programs installed on my computer and I never had trouble accessing Help files before doing a Windows Update a couple of days before all of this began. Guess if I need to access the old Help files I'll install the programs on our XP machine and read 'em there. <G> Again- thanx so much for your help.
  18. Once again I'm looking to tap in to the knowledge here. I am running Windows 7 Pro (64). A couple of nites ago I installed Adobe PageMaker 7.0 and found I couldn't access any of the Help files. Turns out that Win 7 and newer do not come equipped with the file (WinHLP32.exe) necessary to run/read old help files. I went to the Microsoft site and found the file I needed but to download it I had to verify/validate my copy of Win 7. After more research and enabling scripting and switching from Chrome to IE, joy!, I got MS's blessing to download WinHLP32.exe- which I did. No sooner then the download finished and I saw that it had been blocked. Drat! Don't have a clue what's doing the blocking because, other than another time on MS's site*, I've not had a problem with downloads being blocked. Today I have spent looking for what is holding up the show and I came across some words of wisdom from caintry_boy to a poster with a similar problem. In that post he expressed some concern that the problem might be malware and encouraged the poster to download and run Malwarebytes(sp?) and DDS. I thought that was a good place to start and attempted to download both and, you guessed it, both of them are also blocked. I'm going to see if there is something in Windows Security I can turn off. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them. Thanx in advance. * I just love MS...
  19. I can't test my 98 SE machine anymore?!! I love PCPitstop and have since I read about it on LockerGnome (right after I got this machine- originally built by good ole Tiger Direct) back in '99. While I appreciate your investment (and, in fact, do not think capitalism is a dirty word) it still feels like a good friend let me down...
  20. Amen! Because they take your info themselves? <VEG>
  21. I'd like to see them charged and tried as soon as possible, but get tired of the hand-wringing about the "panties on the head" and the like. *sniff**sniff* At least those folks still have heads... Thanx for the interesting discussion.
  22. Long-standing? Are you talking about Castro's prisons?
  23. I think we should send 'em some cheese to go with their whine.
  24. It freezes because those nasty little buggers* are alive! <G> (I wish I was kidding 100%) *Trojans, spies, ad infinitum...
